Hi everyone!
I have just graduated the University Degree of Translation & Interpreting in Romania and I’m looking for a job. I’m interested in Audiovisual translation (English into Romania) but I have no idea where I can apply for such a job. I have no experience in this field, only a 5 months training course I attended last in year in Spain. I would really like to work as a subtitle operator! I wanted to ask you, professional translators who have experience or knowledge in this field, if you could give me some advice of where to go, or what to do.
I really look forward to hearing from you and your opinions! ▲ Collapse

I used to work for a couple of years during my study years for SDI Media group company, which is a world-wide group specializing in subtitling/dubbing TV broadcasts, movies, DVDs etc. Try applying for them, I just checked out their website (www.sdimedia.com), they are present also in Romania.

Congratz & some tips

I've started from acquiring an unique domain of lithuanian subtitling firm in first hours after it's domain name dropping (it was in Quarantine). So, I received influx of my first clients - rest was word from a mouth. Placing archive of subtitles at site also helped a bit (as well registration @DMOZ).

As for software, I'd like to recommend UruSoft's Subtitle Workshop v2.51 So far for me it's best freeware tool; tried over dozen of commercial apps over years, but none was smart enough. Get ABBYY Lingvo v12.0 ML plus 2008's pack (150 additional dictionaries) - it'll help you a lot.
Romania is "tricky" country for part of business deals, so don't forget to pay enough attention for building your credibility from a start. Establishing a site for promotion of your services can be started from cheap *.info domain, but have in mind "IPv4 exhaustion" issue & acquire good domain within 1 year.
P.S.: adding more languages to your repertoire will not hurt, either. Spanish? ▲ Collapse

Do also check the background of companies before getting involved. There are a lot of nasty companies in the subtitling business ripping off especially new-comers and students. You find the best jobs working directly for TV channels and film companies.
Check the comments on the Blue Board, Facebook groups etc.
