the part I need help with is the transition. Can I translate this as two sentences? Thanks in advance.

To ASKER: Here you go: Kazakhstan has already been accomplishing sizable results without the American involvement in Afghan policy. At the same time, the current goal of the US political agenda encompasses promoting Kazakh business in Afghanistan in order to realign trade and capital flows from the north (Russia) and the east (China) to the south.
Elizabeth Kulikov (asker) Apr 30, 2014:
Actually, I was hoping someone would let me know what that might sound like as two sentences. I've already figured it out and handed the translation in, but I would still love it if someone wants to provide a suggesting exactly how to translate this term, the transition words themselves. Thanks.
rtransr Apr 29, 2014:
Thank you.
However, I assure you that no stones will come from me :) Just opinions and suggestions. That's why we are all here to begin with, right?
Mikhail Kropotov Apr 29, 2014:
Feel free -- I don't have a heart of stone after all. And if you ever feel like casting some stones my way, shoot -- I live just a stone's throw away. Just first make sure you don't live in a glass house. But always remember, I don't leave any stone unturned (especially that rolling one which gathers no moss) when I need to kill two birds with a single, er, projectile.
rtransr Apr 29, 2014:
As to the suggestions.... my understanding is that Elizabeth was simply asking whether it's appropriate and acceptable to split the sentence into two. Therefore - simple answer.
By the way, my uttermost respect to you for using the "dog", "worms", "chips", and even "cake" all in one sentence! I mean it - very impressive and it truly brightened up my day :) Permission to use it?
Mikhail Kropotov Apr 29, 2014:
Oh, I have a most impressive collection of stones! But hey, they say let sleeping dogs lie, so I'll put the lid back on this can of worms for now and even eat the chip off my shoulder (remembering that one can't have one's cake and eat it too).

In other words, we can get back to задачей же.
rtransr Apr 29, 2014:
to Mikhail: I can see that " straightforward" comment is targeting my grammar :)) You are right, of course. My comment was sent from IPhone, so I didn't double-check spelling..... it happens sometimes :) "let him who is without sin cast the first stone" :)
Mikhail Kropotov Apr 29, 2014:
Oh, and speaking of native English fluency, 'straightforward' is one word, not two.
Mikhail Kropotov Apr 29, 2014:
I'm not arguing with you there. What I find so funny is that no one has offered a translation for the term in question nor proposed any concrete translation option for the whole source sentence. This is especially weird considering that the asker is a native speaker of English. In all likelihood she's asking, "If I decide to split this into two sentences, how would I go about translating the term 'задачей же'?", not simply "Should I split this into two sentences?".
rtransr Apr 29, 2014:
In general: IMHO, It's not simply a grammar question, but rather an opinion about the text's appeal to an English speaker. I can attest that American readers prefer straight forward, shorter sentences in general over lengthy complicated ones, in the situations when it's possible, of course.
It's just the way it is. My opinion is based not only on translations but also on my corporate experience.
Mikhail Kropotov Apr 29, 2014:
Am I the only one treating this as a term question, not a grammar question?
Sarah McDowell Apr 29, 2014:
Agree about 2 sentences It's rather long and complicated and would be more appropriate as 2 sentences in English.
Judith Hehir Apr 29, 2014:
Yes, Elizabeth. I, too, would break this up into 2 sentences exactly as you have suggested, i.e., at ", задачей же"

That's just one way not to separate them into two sentences.

Alternatively, you can start the sentence with 'While.' Then you won't need a conjunction before 'задачей же.' The choice depends on the surrounding context.

Hi Elizabeth,

The subject of the second clause is активизация казахстанского бизнеса в Афганистане, so we can rewrite it as:

активизация... является задачей американской политики

задачей is the complement, and является always takes its complement in the instrumental case.

I hope this helps.

Two sentences or separate them by ";" instead of ","

I believe splitting this one in two sentences would sound and read more appealing to an English speaker.
If you have reservations about separating the sentence in two, you can simply separate it by using ";", instead of "," in front of "задачей же" .
