German term

Raumkühlung / Raumheizung

German to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering
I am translating a manual for a domestic heating and hot water system that can also be used for cooling. These 2 terms are used as opposites but I am not keen on space cooling as suggested by a glossary - how about air conditioning and heating - leaving Raum out?
Proposed translations (English)
4 HVAC
4 +1 space heating/space cooling

Discussion

Alan Johnson Jun 24, 2009:
HVAC is the name of the industry or trade, I wouldn't use it in this context.

Nor do I believe you should just drop the "Raum". It is a common enough term even in a manual for the "layman". It amounts to dumming down.
milinad Jun 24, 2009:
you can safely leave out 'Raum' (space / room)
Wendy Lewin (asker) Jun 23, 2009:
It is actually heating a room / an area in a house so I guess I don't need differentiation. Thanks Richard and Bruce for your comments
Bruce Appleton Jun 23, 2009:
If the target audience is general public / domestic users then I'd tend to go for 'air conditioning / heating'.
Bernd Runge Jun 23, 2009:
Differentiation required? between Raumheizung/-kühlung und Luftheizung/-kühlung?
Richard Stephen Jun 23, 2009:
That was my first thought when I read the question - leave out 'Raum'

space heating/space cooling

Is the terminus technicus. Please don't group more than one term into one question. See the link for space cooling.

Note from asker:
The links you provide all seem to be about factories, industry large spaces. This is domestic and the reason I put both terms is they belong together in the text. Thanks anyway
