With the weekend coming up, I thought that maybe the lucky ones of us that don't have to work might like to share a good book. So, do you have any recommendations - something you are reading now or have, in my case, just finished? (though it has taken me a month )

Here is my suggestion:

Here is my suggestion:

"Middlesex" by Jeffrey Eugenides - winner of the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction

Absolutely aborbing read, entertaining, informative, maybe not for the faint of heart (the narrator is a hermaphrodite), but if you enjoy well written literature, this is a book for you.

If you have a suggestion, why not share it?

Happy reading over the weekend!

The Book of Daniel Mar 10, 2006

I would like to share a book that I found rather disgusting and horrific, when I first started reading it, but when I was nearing the end, I started simply loving it!
I even sat down and read "The Book of Daniel" in the Bible to draw any parallels that might have been intended.

It's by E.L. Doctorow - other books by his hand are also recommendable!

Krakauer, Brown, Eco Mar 10, 2006

Hi,
I am just finishing Jon Krakauers Under the Banner of Heaven (ciriticism of fundamentalist Mormonism, based on trues stories, investigative, extremely interesting). And my private best book ever written: The Name of Rose - Umberto Eco (thrilling, makes you think, intersting fromt he point of literary approahces and methods - particularly those who enjoy non-traditional ways of interpreting the reality, types of narratives etc.).
During my university studies I had a problem reading fiction. I was used to read non-fiction only or if fiction - then only something that related to my studies (all P. D. james's series for my diploma thesis - being an expert on P. D. james now:-))). What brought me back to reading somewhat escapist literature was the book by Dan Brown - Da Vinci Code. Not a Pulitzer Winner but very absorbing and even inspiring.

"Soñar en Cubano", Cristina García Mar 10, 2006

I'm reading the Spanish translation by Marisol Pales, but "Dreaming in Cuban" is the original one.

It's pretty engaging and talks about a 13-year-old who grew up in NY after her parents decided to leave Cuba due to Fidel's gaining power. Feeling miserable, the girl decided to take off without a warning and reunite with her grandma in her hometown. It deals with cultural shocks, loss of identity, and relearning a language she was forced to forget. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Two exquisite books Mar 10, 2006

I have recently read two exquisite Canadian books - I don't know how easy they are to get in other parts of the world.

"The Jade Peony" and the sequel "All that Matters" by Wayson Choy.

They are about a family of Chinese immigrants living in Vancouver's Chinatown in the late 30s/early 40s, written from the perspective of the children.

Highly recommended.

Also, try 'The Time-traveller's wife' by Audrey Nieffenegger.
