Happy Hallowe'en is all very well, but I hate the "trick or treat" custom which has spread to the UK from the USA. The "tricks" are sometimes downright acts of vandalism.

Agree Jack. As long as I'm out of the house when all the little hoodies invade my street and try to knock my door in, I'm happy.

We get over a hundred children coming down our street, because we live in the county seat of a largely rural area. But parents bring the kids, so there are no "tricks." In fact, I have noticed that over the past few decades the "tricks" part of "trick or treating" has largely been forgotten on this side of the pond. I don't miss it.

The tricks round here seem to be limited to kids attempting to behead one another using their plastic swords. Long live the Hollywood machine (and its $30 kids' Halloween costumes!)*
