While I'd be hard pressed to pick out one favorite poem, Pablo Neruda's love poetry is by far my favorite. The entire book 100 Love Sonnets is gorgeous (esp. in Spanish), and I also love The Captain's Verses. From the latter book, "Your Hands" is my all-time favorite: When your hands go out, love, toward mine, what do they bring me, flying? Why do I recognize them... Love's Philosophy ~ Percy Bysshe Shelley The fountains mingle with the river, And the rivers with the ocean; The winds of heaven mix forever With a sweet emotion; Nothing in the world is single; All things by a law divine In another's being mingle-- Why not I with thine? See more A Poem by Nichita Stanescu Tell me, if I caught you one day and kissed the sole of your foot, wouldn't you limp a little then, afraid to crush my kiss?... *********************************** Love at First Sight by Wislawa Szymborska They both thought that a sudden feeling had united them This certainty is beautiful, Even more beautiful than uncertainty. They thought they didn't know each other, nothing had ever happened between them, These streets, these stairs, this corridors, Where they could have met so long ago? I would like to ask them, if they can remember - perhaps in a revolving door face to face one day? A "sorry" in the crowd? "Wrong number" on the phone? - but I know the answer. No, they don't remember. How surprised they would be For such a long time already Fate has been playing with them. Not quite yet ready to change into destiny, which brings them nearer and yet further, cutting their path and stifling a laugh, escaping ever further; There were sings, indications, undecipherable, what does in matter. Three years ago, perhaps or even last Tuesday, this leaf flying from one shoulder to another? Something lost and gathered. Who knows, perhaps a ball already in the bushes, in childhood? There were handles, door bells, where, on the trace of a hand, another hand was placed; suitcases next to one another in the left luggage. And maybe one night the same dream forgotten on walking; But every beginning is only a continuation and the book of fate is always open in the middle. ************* Those were a couple of my favourites. And Amra, just in case, try one of the Croatian best poets, Dobrisa Cesaric, and his poem 'Povratak'. I can't find it in English, sadly... Seadeta ▲ Collapse

One shade the more, one ray the less, Had half impair'd the nameless grace Which waves in every raven tress, Or softly lightens o'er her face; Where thoughts serenely sweet express How pure, how dear their dwelling-place. And on that cheek, and o'er that brow, So soft, so calm, yet eloquent, The smiles that win, the tints that glow, But tell of days in goodness spent, A mind at peace with all below, A heart whose love is innocent! ▲ Collapse | | | Edna St. Vincent Millay - Sonnet XLVII | Feb 12, 2006 |
Well, I have lost you, and I lost you fairly; In my own way, and with my full consent. Say what you will, kings in a tumbrel rarely Went to their deaths as proud as this one went. If I had loved you less, or played you slyly I might have held you for a summer more, But at the cost of words I value highly, And no such summer as the one before. Should I outlive this anguish--and men do-- I shall have only good to say of you. Edna St. Vincent Millay ▲ Collapse

Well, let it be here, for others to enjoy. Regards, Diana

Your Laughter Take bread away from me, if you wish, take air away, but do not take from me your laughter. See more Your Laughter Take bread away from me, if you wish, take air away, but do not take from me your laughter. Do not take away the rose, the lance flower that you pluck, the water that suddenly bursts forth in joy, the sudden wave of silver born in you. My struggle is harsh and I come back with eyes tired at times from having seen the unchanging earth, but when your laughter enters it rises to the sky seeking me and it opens for me all the doors of life. My love, in the darkest hour your laughter opens, and if suddenly you see my blood staining the stones of the street, laugh, because your laughter will be for my hands like a fresh sword. Next to the sea in the autumn, your laughter must raise its foamy cascade, and in the spring, love, I want your laughter like the flower I was waiting for, the blue flower, the rose of my echoing country. Laugh at the night, at the day, at the moon, laugh at the twisted streets of the island, laugh at this clumsy boy who loves you, but when I open my eyes and close them, when my steps go, when my steps return, deny me bread, air, light, spring, but never your laughter for I would die. http://www.poemhunter.com/p/m/poem.asp?poet=6638&poem=29976 Just can't find the name of the translator ... sorry.
