My latest YouTube video compares the way four mainstream CAT tools (SDL Trados Studio 2011, Wordfast Pro 3.1, memoQ translator pro 6 and Déjà Vu X2) deal with spaces (normal and non-breaking):

The video also shows how the “smart quotes” feature works in Wordfast Pro and memoQ (no such feature in Studio and Déjà Vu AFAIK). ▲ Collapse

Interesting video comparing this feature across the different tools.
Just to mention that one of the quickest ways of showing whitespace characters in Word and Studio (and possibly the other tools) is with the keyboard, by pressing Ctrl+shift+8.

Yes, thanks for pointing out this omission! I also noticed the same shortcut can be used in Wordfast Pro as well, and I failed to notice memoQ does have a paragraph mark on its toolbar (although no keyboard shortcut for it as far as I can see).

In OmegaT you can't view spaces as little dots like one can in e.g. MS Word, but you can opt to have non-breaking spaces marked in grey, using View > Mark Non-breakable Spaces. The non-breaking space is visible in the Edit pane but not in the Fuzzy Matches pane.

In OmegaT, multiple spaces are displayed as-is for MSO XML files, but for ODF files multiple spaces are indicated using a single space plus a "spacer tag".

There is no helpful character map in OmegaT, so inserting a non-breaking space means either copying it from the source text or using your operating system's character insert function (or, on Windows, Alt+0160). The non-breaking space isn't always immediately visible, so you have to move your cursor a bit to wake it up.

There is no autoreplace or smart replace function in OmegaT (though OmegaT's internal script engine might support it... I don't know).
