My husband happens to be a software engineer and an IT specialist, so I just send a note to my very personal helpdesk.... Never lets me down
And I'm learning a lot from him too, so I don't need his help quite as much as I used to.

Most of the times I found the solution on internet. Deleting tmp files and doing a system restore have done wonders to my computer.
Another solution to all the problems I used to had with my computer was ... not sharing it with the rest of the family. When I wasn't working my children would start playing with it and downloading all kind of rubbish from internet. Now I have my own computer and well...not a single problem in months!

Most times I fix it myself coz I do lots of things with my pc, besides work and hate to be without it. I'm even thinking of buying another-more modern- just in case. Problem is sometimes they take more than a week to repair it, and I do hundreds of things in a week!

... then:
1. Restart and do NOT cross fingers...
2. Try to fix it myself...
3. Restart again...
4. Grab a snack while it restarts...
5. Repeat 2 to 3 until it IS fixed (at 3rd time, start to CROSS fingers)...
6. These things usually happen at night and Step 5 almost always takes long: Go to sleep!!!

not to get angry, then, I try to fix her myself. If she doesn´t want to start, I begin talking to her very softly. As she surely won´t do what I want, I call my friend, who is an IT engineer, and I say to him: Come home because my machine is against me!!!
Then, I relax and begin the process all over again.
Regards!

| I'm the IT gal ;-) | Jul 6, 2007 |
I used to work as a tech support agent for the UK and German markets so I can fix general driver, installation, multimedia and network connection problems.
One thing that bugs the hell out of me is the hung application message in MS Word.
Aside from that, I don't panic too much if I have an IT problem. OK, it is frustrating, but there is always a way out of it.

I just need to substitute the word son for daughter.
I also have a co-worker who's kind of a computer geek. I think everyone should include a computer geek in their list of friends.

For the first 14 years of my professional life, I was a full-time IT professional and part-time linguist. Usually, if the machine starts acting up, I can talk nice to it and get it to cooperate.
And just in case it won't, I make tons of backups, some of which are stored off site.

I'm with Ruth on this one, I need more than one option.
Try to fix it myself
Take a break
Grab a snack
Call a techie
Go to sleep
Restart and cross my fingers
Ah, the joys of modern technology and computers pretending they are having a life of their own (acting funny! you stupid thing, you were not made for that purpose).
Have a great weekend. Mieke
| Fix it myself | Jul 7, 2007 |
I'd try to fix it myself although I've learned some 'tricks of the trade' only last month. In the end, just before starting to go crazy, I'd call my fido technician!
