I just did! Aug 28, 2006

Had to laugh out loud when I saw this new poll. I had just gotten an email for a job I couldn't accept (wrong language pair) and came to ProZ to get the URL of the profile page of the person I wanted to recommend.

I do it as a matter of system and the person recommended is usually an area specialist.

Very often Aug 28, 2006

I usually recommend two or three colleagues when I am asked to act as an interpreter in conferences, seminars and so on.
I do this because I am sure of their professional skills and performance.

I only recommend other translators for very specific projects requiring local accent that I do not master.

Otherwise, I get really nervous about referring my own clients to other people--a double-edged knife to me; there is a possibility that I might lose my clients for good if the other translator provided them lower rates! They might even assume that the quality of her/his translation in MY fields and pairs must be decent enough that I dared to recommend her/him.

I prefer to overwork myself in order to please my clients and keep my status as their go-to person as long as possible.

??

I do all the time, but from the pool of people who do not undercut each other - we work together a lot, we are friends and colleagues, and we are above petty theft.

That would be an entirely different thing, Irene

Several times, mostly through getting into an unintended situation Aug 29, 2006

I accepted a free offer from Yellow Pages for a brief entry in their local directory. It turned out that they just put me down as a translator, without saying which languages. So I often get calls from people wanting translations I can't do. But I am a member of a local ITI translators' group, so I can recommend translators from my list of them.
The only other occasions have been to farm out parts of jobs I thought were too big for me (with the client's approval, of course).
