Lots of walking | Mar 15, 2006 |
I'm one of those rare non-drivers so I tend to walk everywhere which I judge to be within walking distance (which is a lot further than most of my car-driver friends would judge as walkable, I might add!)
Latin American and Standard dances. Something you can't describe!!!!!!

I go to yoga classes with a friend, or swimming with another friend, or walking by myself.
How typical that only 5% of us practice "social" sports!

It is hard to find the time to exercise. Big translation jobs take up most of the day. I make a point of taking a morning daily walk, though sometimes that is not possible.

If I must comment... I belly dance!
any movement is good, no movement hurts! | Mar 15, 2006 |
Translating is such a stationary job. I can't sit still all day long. I used to do karate which kept me very fit, but now with a teenager and two teenage step-kids I don't get that kind of time I can dedicate to myself. Luckily I have a dog and we live in the countryside, so despite the snow and wind (March?!) I just got back in from a fast walk through the trails and I found this poll. Whenever mind and body need a little wake up, off we go, even if it's just for a 10 minute power walk.

It helps (along with a good chair) to keep my back from hurting too - is backache a common problem out there? ▲ Collapse
I go diving! | Mar 15, 2006 |
Work or no work, I never miss dive training on Tuesday night and I often go diving during the weekend! No better place than the deep blue sea or an old stone quarry to relax. Under water is the only place on earth where clients cannot call, fax or email you! And once in a while, that's exactly what we need!

Am I the only one out there doing the gym 4-5 days a week? I also do 3-hour hikes on Sundays.
detensioning is important too! | Mar 15, 2006 |
I should have added something about regular 'detensioning' shoulder exercises - which are all the exercise I get some days apart from reaching out for my coffee cup or a dictionary
Important as they are, they need supplementing!
Seriously, I was hoping for some good tips. It's the coldest March for 30 years here and my motivation has dropped through the floor... See more
Are we really this unsociable?! | Mar 15, 2006 |
Our jobs keep us tapping away on the computer for hours on end and we still prefer non-group exersise. Only 4% of the answers noted team sports.
I play football and hockey just to stay sane! I think its essential to have group interaction, face-to-face team work, at least once a week - otherwise we will inevitably lose the touch to be a team player and the end result cannot be good.

I love my team sports - I can't wait to get out of the house and, especially playing hockey, bash into people and release all the stress that has built up during the week of staring at the screen. Every now and then my team even wins which is the topping on the cake but even when we lose, I come out happy that for at least that couple of hours the only thing frustrating me is the referee! The post-game drinks are also a great way to relax and forget about everything else.
P.S. May I add a small note here to all those people, especially in Finland recently, that complain that hockey is a violent sport - most of the time it isn't - there is a clear distinction between a physical sport and a violent one. ▲ Collapse
non-team sports doesn't mean we're not social | Mar 15, 2006 |

Personally, I have to say that just because I opted for walking and do that pretty much on my own a lot of the time, it doesn't mean that I'm not social too. I'm not a hugely sporty person, but that doesn't mean that I don't enjoy getting together and having a good time with people!

You're right, I was as surprised as you are! It only confirms the image of the solitary translator... But diving is a team sport! Diving alone is out of the question, although I admit you can't talk while diving. But that is what the long debriefing sessions in the nearest pub or during a barbecue by the seaside are for!!

whenever I get time. It is convenient, becuase the University swimming pool is near by and there is another in the district. But temporarily I am not very active here, so go for an hour´s walk. Brandis
