How interesting that most of us know less than 5 translators 'in real'!
I voted 11-20 considering the people I know and meet more or less regularly. But after voting, I recalled my university fellows and some of my translation teachers and if I take them into account (since I know them offline of course!), then it'll go easily beyond 20

Wow! Over 50 professional translators? That's a lot. I'm sure that's a rarity! Do they all (most of them) work for the same company?

Most of the professional translators I know personally (offline)were initially met online.
Do they count for the purpose of this poll?

Yes, I found that astonishing too! When I thought up the question and then remembered the uni lecturers etc etc, I realised I know a lot more than I initially thought!
I've never been to a pow-wow although I'd really like to. Been too shy/scared until now I guess

In view of Roberta's subsequent request for clarification and Smart T's response, you may - I stress may - have to reconsider your answer in order for the poll to be as accurate as possible.
In view of the possible confusion and people answering before/without reading this thread, maybe site management can edit the question, making it clear that the poll includes people initially met offline as well, before more people participate?

I started reading the discussion to see if I could understand the question which leads to several interpretations.

i am shocked to see that leading choice is "less than 5"... i know more than 20 professional translators and interpreters, whom i didn't meet online... we met in various situations.
i believe that you need to know and be in contact with other people within your profession (any profession) in order to better do your job. i met only a few persons through proz.com and i hope to meet more, but... the people i met in real life are those whom i can rely on, we do projects together, we pa... this is not the point, the point is that i started wandering why is "less than 5" the leading answer? does it maybe come from the people who are 'fresh' translators or those who have been doing the job for many years? if the later one is the case, than i am worried to conclude that translators are maybe jealous of each other and do not really enter into relationships with other, maybe to protect their knowledge or client drain or what?! ▲ Collapse

I agree with Dusica's comments. I am very surprised about the poll results so far. Don't people network? Don't we attend meetings organised by either professional institutions or other continuous professional development events? I find it invaluable to be and keep in contact with a number of colleagues...

That's an interesting answer. Do you really count attending a powwow as 'personally knowing' all the translators that were there? Were they even all professionals?
