Pushing up daisies seems the most likely fate for me 10 years from now.

I don't know Feb 1, 2024

If it is hard to tell what the impact of AI will be the coming year or two years, it is obviously impossible to tell what the situation will be in ten years.

In ten years from now my house will be completely paid for and my youngest son will be 24. I could live with a significant decrease in income by then, so I hope that I will be able to continue my freelancing business, be it at another level. Or at the same level... Who knows?

Other Feb 1, 2024

I expect to have earned enough by then for early retirement, but probably that would be boring, so I may combine parttime early retirement with some translation assignments and/or something completely different. Perhaps I should have chosen "10 years is a long time" instead

I’m well beyond retiring age, then if genes have to be blamed, my father worked as a consultant until the day he died (at 93) and my mother died at 105 and she used to say that the worst decision she ever took was to stop working at 95 …

Doing something else ... because AI will have replaced me. Feb 1, 2024

In 10 years AI will be doing most translation. "Traditional" translation will be a thing of the past. Only the most poetic or subjective texts will require human intervention. We're all in denial.

Or a lot of translators don't understand what AI is and, more importantly, what it isn't. Redundant human intervention implies delivery of perfection or near-perfection by AI. How would that even be possible without computers thinking and feeling like human beings? Or do you really believe there will be human-like bots or machines in ten years from now?

How do you know you are not writing with bots already? ^^

...I fear it does not. It merely requires that those ordering it perceive it to be adequate for their requirements.

Close enough Feb 1, 2024

The AI will be so good it will be close enough to texts by written by humans in the vast majority of cases.
In areas where the MT driven by AI is well fed (that is, it's already translated thousands of similar texts) the results are already astonishingly good
And it's only going to get better, to the point where only some revision will be necessary - if that.
