Translation - English OASIS AND DESERT IN THE UNITED ARAB EMIRATES
It’s been almost twenty years since Clara Martinez-Thedy debuted in the Dominican Republic’s art circuit with her first solo exhibit, “Africa, Light and Shadow” (La Galeria, 1987). The beautiful landscape, the people, the fauna and flora of the great African plains so enthralled her that they birthed her commitment to photography. Her passion for photographic art has grown in time, sidestepping diversions and remaining basically focused on issues concerning the plight of women and children, which she has built on and addressed from different perspectives.
Born in Bogota to a Uruguayan father and an Argentinean mother, the family was led to different countries in the Americas because of her father’s diplomatic career. These migrations allowed her to become acquainted with many diverse cultures. Martinez-Thedy’s globetrotting during her childhood and adolescence laid the foundations to forge and form a traveling soul that has led her to trek equidistant points of our planet and in some instances share these locations with the public, through several individual and collective exhibits, as well as through her participation in biennials and important international art competitions.
Of late, the artist and her family have set residence in Abu Dhabi, the largest of the seven federated territories of the United Arab Emirates, site of her most recent artistic production, titled “My Window to the Emirates”, hosted by he Emirates Palace Hotel.
Although the Arab Emirates is known for its oil and natural gas exploitation in the Persian Gulf, the country went through a substantial transformation after 1973, turning it into a modern nation. The Arab Emirates has diversified its national income by developing high-class tourism, offering coastal, sports and desert facilities as visitors’ main attractions. This is topped by an impressive architectural infrastructure that extends throughout the different emirates, among them Dubai’s artificial islands, that house the monumental Burj al-Arab (Arabian Tower) and Palm Islands.
Even though Clara Martinez-Thedy has used black-and-white technique as a means of expression throughout most of her work, this time she submerges in color, which she uses wisely and discreetly in a series where large formats are predominant. Diptychs, triptychs and polyptychs strike out from a daring montage that is easy to read, that merges the traditional to the contemporary within the Arab Emirates. These pictures have an extraordinary beauty and profound serenity, which the artist has garnered through panoramic views as well as through a targeted use of fragments.
This show focuses the culture and traditions of this singular nation, which has been able to open its doors to the western world’s sporting, cultural and architectural trends, such as Formula-One races and high-end aerial acrobatics shows and an array of modern buildings that have changed the landscape of the stunning urban conglomerates within the prosperous emirates, despite the nation’s deeply ingrained customs.
Martinez-Thedy brings to the show one of the issues she is most passionate about – woman and identity. From a local standpoint she shows us the woman she us surrounded by, the one she lives with, has had the chance to get to know in time and within this progressive nation she now calls home. The artist focuses on the different ambiences these women move in and shows both the more traditional women, dressed in their native abayas, and the more westernized women, while at the same time highlighting their liaisons through striking shots.
This is, precisely, the greatest contrast we grasp through these photographic images: beaches framed by skyscrapers and dotted with typical fishing boats, impressive mosques, camel races, Arabian horses, nomadic Bedouins in the desert, male dancers, women clad in their long tunics, doing their daily chores; some following the current fashion trends within the bounds of their customs and beliefs and other, more conservative women wearing their veils and chadors, while yet others happily engage in the hair dance.
The majestic views of the desert sand are the reference point Clara Martinez-Thedy uses to show us this sharp collection that shows the harmonious coexistence of different cultures within a conviviality of mutual respect and tolerance, caught by a singular and very fitting point of view.
