Spanish to English: Passages from “Stories from the Subway”, by Elvira Lindo
Translation - English It was 1939 when musician Duke Ellington met the man who would later become his closest collaborator, Billy Strayhorn. On a trip to Pittsburgh, Ellington, who was already known as the Duke by then, became so impressed by young pianist Strayhorn´s talent that he invited him to come to New York and join the band. Noticing Strayhorn's reluctance, Duke drew him a map with all the necessary directions on how to get to his house on Sugar Hill, an elegant Harlem back then. Billy Strayhorn soon arrived at the Harlem house and didn´t come empty-handed either: he brought the score to a melody he´d composed based on the directions given to him by the maestro. Duke Ellington liked "Take the A Train" so much that from that day on he opened every concert with it. The melody thus became a song and no worthwhile jazz singer hasn´t sung some version of it, though it was Ella Fitzgerald´s voice that made it most popular.
I got on the New York subway for the first time in 1991. It was safe by then, but even so I was alarmed by the violent noise and the sight of that strange Noah´s Ark carrying all possible varieties of the human species. Almost sixteen years have passed and, even today, when I slide the edge of my subway card through the machine I know I am paying for much more than transportation. It is not some out-of-towner´s feeling, it happens to the New Yorker just the same (who is watching it all even though he acts like he isn´t). Each time you meet up with someone it´s rare if the conversation doesn´t start with, "Guess what happened to me on the subway today." These are stories that liven up conversations, and inspire tales and songs.
