I have just been asked by an agency if I am interested in translating SEO keywords for a tourism website on an ongoing basis. From the little I understand so far, the words/ phrases (keywords) are not seen by the website user, rather search engines access them when internet users are browsing. I have just been asked by an agency if I am interested in translating SEO keywords for a tourism website on an ongoing basis. From the little I understand so far, the words/ phrases (keywords) are not seen by the website user, rather search engines access them when internet users are browsing. The client wants the words/ phrases translated (providing a number of options) using keywords typical to the English language. I would be expected to research hits using google trends. The keywords are presented in an excel file. My instructions so far are that I charge a rate per word that reflects the research work involved. As I have never done this before, I have no idea how long this will take and thus, what I should charge.

I was just wondering if anyone out there with experience in this field could throw a bit more light on the area for me and give some advice on rates.

More research than translation Sep 11, 2013

This is no easy task as you have to research each word. I worked on a similar project only once and that was glossary building. The customer had already calculated that I could research and translate 60 words per hour. It worked out to be a fair estimate (may not be the case for you). That was 480 words per day which I prorated based on my regular output (mine is 2500 w/day). I was paid about five times my per word rate.

Such jobs shouldn't use per-word rates really.

This is glossary-building work, not translation, and should be subject to an hourly charge. And yes, one minute or so per word sounds about right, although some may take much more!

I wouldn't touch this kind of thing with a bargepole. The amount of time needed for the research involved is too much of an unknown quantity... so any rate you agree on is likely to end up being insufficient. I suppose you could always try asking the agency how much they were thinking of paying you, but from my point of view this kind of job is best avoided.
