Not certain if they mean hindsight here or greatest fall. Your opinions much appreciated.
TIA Chris.

until the end of the defined observation period

This is undoubtedly referring to the maximum observation period defined for the study. Is it a retrospective study based on patient records? Or prospective?

So the investigators are looking at post-operative complications occurring up until the end of this defined observation period.
BTW you can still use "observation period" in a retrospective study, even though the investigators were not actively observing the subjects at the time.

"Au plus grand recul" simply means as far as possible from the starting point, but that would not sound very epidemiological.

All complications occurring up until the end of the observation period were identified/listed/recorded.

We would not talk about "time series" in this particular context.

in the longest follow-up period (allowed for in the study))

Hello,

I think this link may help you.

It seems that they may be talking about follow-up times in terms of the longest allowed for in the study.

Here, we might have: "All the complications in the longest follow-up period were reported."
