Dutch term

Leer(stof)lijnenmodel

Dutch to English Social Sciences Education / Pedagogy
Maybe: Model for learning pathways
Context: gifted and talented pupils.
'Leer(stof)lijnenmodel': where the (subject) programme is compacted and where pupils may accelerate. In the time that subsequently comes available, the pupils work on activities they are free to choose. There is differentiation in interest, which can yield varying perspectives with respect to the learning pathways (leerlijn) for the pupils.

Actually the term seems to cover both curricula and learning pathways (leerlijnen).

Discussion

Rene Paes (X) (asker) Feb 1, 2006:
differentiated curriculum As a general term is could be appropriate, though the context is much more specific. In the Netherlands there are presently 4 types of education arrangements (leerarrangementen) for the gifted and talented. These are characterised as follows:
1. Compacting and enrichment: a teaching model where the 'normal' subject matter is offered in compact form to (highly) able pupils (or they make their own so-called compact schemes). This gives room for enrichment activities. Enrichment subjects are used in groups. This way, social skills are also trained.
2. The Revolving Door Model: where (highly able) pupils, who can go through the regular subject matter in an accelerated tempo, are allowed to miss regular lessons in part in order to participate in an enrichment track instead.
3. Leer(stof)lijnen model: where the (subject) programme is compacted and where pupils may accelerate. In the time that subsequently comes available, the pupils work on activities they are free to choose. There is differentiation in interest, which can yield varying perspectives with respect to the learning pathways (leerlijn) for the pupils.
4. VWO+ programmes (pre-university education with extra courses): which showa a great variaty in sorts of curricula, e.g. bi-lingual vwo (pre-university education) or a vwo+ learning pathway with extra courses, on top of the regular programme. For all pupils applies the same programme, which is aggrevated compared to the regular pre-university education programme, with respect to content and sometimes also with respect to the number of teaching periods per week.

So I want to distinguish 'Leer(stof)lijnenmodel' from the other differentiated curricula.

Thanks, Chris, you brought me at least very close, I'll ask the writer.

differentiated curriculum

I'm not an expert on this, but my understanding of the term is that it refers to a **differentiated curriculum**, so that high-attaining or gifted pupils in a class are still challenged, while the rest of the class continue with the regular curriculum as planned. I believe it involves 'extending the lines of the curriculum' (i.e. giving the kids more challenging tasks to apply what they've already learned) rather than adding new material. This way, gifted kids can remain in the same class as their peers, but still 'run faster'.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "'Differentiated curriculum' is acceptable, though in the remarks of Chris I find an even better term: 'extention of the lines of the curriculum'."
