Aged care
All,
I am revising an information sheet on upcoming reforms to the Australian aged care system. The reforms are being introduced following a Royal Commission into the system. The paragraph in question describes the key areas of a new Aged Care Act.
It reads:
“The new Act will:
• create a simple, single-entry point to make access to the aged care system for older people easier
• include a fair, ***culturally safe*** single assessment process
• include rules on supported decision- making to ensure older people have choice and control”
The current translation reads:
I wonder whether “kulturell sicher” is the best translation here or if it can be improved.
I will appreciate all suggestions.
Thank you.
Peter

S. 36): "Wenn Pflegebedürftige keine ihrer Kultur angemessene Pflege erfahren..." https://unipub.uni-graz.at/obvugrhs/content/titleinfo/556497...

kultursensibel
This would have been my spontaneous guess and on googling the term, most hits relate to care for the elderly (see example below), so it does seem to be a current phrase in this context.

: "Kulturgerecht" wäre auch noch eine Möglichkeit. Siehe z. B. https://integrationsratswahlen.nrw/wahlpruefsteine (ebenfalls im Kontext Pflege/Altenpflege).

diskriminierungsfrei

Discussion
In the end, I decided that - in the context - Steffen's suggestion was the most fitting one.
"Eigentlich betont dieser Begriff etwas Besonderes, was keine Besonderheit darstellen sollte.

"Cultural safety is a concept that emerged in the late 1980s as a framework for the delivery of more appropriate health services for the Maori people in New Zealand. More recently it has become recognised that the concept is useful in all health care settings - not just those involving Indigenous peoples, eg. Maori, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. A commonly used definition of cultural safety is that of Williams (1999) who defined cultural safety as:
an environment that is spiritually, socially and emotionally safe, as well as physically safe for people; where there is no assault challenge or denial of their identity, of who they are and what they need. It is about shared respect, shared meaning, shared knowledge and experience of learning together (p.213)."

"Cultural safety demands actions that recognise, respect and nurture the unique cultural identity of a person and safely meets their needs, expectations and rights.
It means working from the cultural perspective of the other person, not from your own perspective.
Characteristics that indicate a culturally safe workplace include:
clear, value-free, open and respectful communication
trust between workers with all contributions valued
stereotypical barriers recognised and avoided
everyone is engaged in a two-way dialogue where knowledge is shared."
https://www.safework.nsw.gov.au/safety-starts-here/our-abori...
