German term

Landesschützenbataillon 416

German to English Social Sciences History Military History
I'm translating a Russian text about the Holocaust and it mentions the Landesschützenbataillon 416 (the German name is in parentheses) and describes it as the "416th Rear Guard Infantry Battalion" (in translation). I would rather not translate a translation, so I thought I'd go to the source and ask my colleagues who work from German.
What would you call this battalion in proper English?

Discussion

TDVTrans Aug 30, 2023:
not sure about the rear guard I believe this refers to an infantry unit, and I think more specifically riflemen or marksmen.

416th (German Guards') National Rifles Battalion

The esteemed, first Discussion Entry could be usefully posted as an answer.

It's a Battalion rather than a Brigade, Regiment, Platoon or Unit - different sizes that need not be canvassed here.

Otherwise, (UK RAF) Air Squadrons tend to have the number following as an extension or suffix e.g. Squadron no. 416.
Example sentence:

The Guards Rifles Battalion (German: Garde-Schützen-Bataillon; French: Bataillon des Tirailleurs de la Garde; nicknamed: Neuchâteller in High German; Neffschandeller in Berlin German dialect) was an infantry unit of the Prussian Army.

The evolution of German military rifles is a history of common and diverse paths followed by the separate German states, until the mid-19th century when Prussia emerged as the dominant state within Germany and the *nation was unified*.

Peer comment(s):

neutral philgoddard : The question is about Landesschützenbataillon, not Garde-Schützen-Bataillon, a unit of the Prussian army disbanded after the first world war.

neutral Marion Linssen : Exactly, with Phil. We are in WW II, 1941/1942. See my first link below.

As you said Landesschützen units got their personnel from older age classes and soldiers not totally fit for frontline duties. They were used to protect installations (depots, POW camps, concentration camps, bridges etc..) of all kind in the Reich and in some cases also in occupied territory.

Note from asker:
Thank you! If you post this as an answer, I will happily give you the points. I now understand that the "territorial aspect" refers to the Rear Area. So it's an infantry or rifle battalion for Rear Area security.

agree philgoddard : I would give the German name followed by whatever is the Russian for "territorial battalion" in brackets. You should have posted this as an answer.
