German term

Berufsfachschule für electrotechnik

German to English Social Sciences Education / Pedagogy
In a certificate of school leave, the owner of the certificate is said to have graduated from "Berufsfachschule für electrotechnik"
Well, this has been translated as "Vocational school for electrical engineering" several times elsewhere, but I doubt this would be accurate.
An electrical engineer does not get a certificate from a vocational school; it is taken from universities.
Would it be better to call it "Vocational school for electrical technologies" or something like that?

Discussion

Johannes Gleim Sep 10, 2023:
@ Cenk Please close the question and add the chosen translation to the glossary for other colleagues to look up when they need to translate the same term.
Schtroumpf Sep 4, 2023:
Johannes Gleim Sep 4, 2023:
Dear Cenk thank you for the additional context! In Germany, all federal states have sovereignty over school and further education institutions, prescribe the type of school and its designations, as well as the learning content and qualifications. Therefore, in such matters, one must refer to the respective federal state if one wants to compare educational institutions and degrees. In this case, it is the Berufliche Schule" (vocational school) in the federal state of Hamburg that offers additional advanced courses to obtain the tigle "Techniker" (technican). I I took a similar educational path in another federal state, where the educational institution in question was called "Berufsaufbauschule". In other Länder, different designations were or still are common, such as "Berufsfachschule", "Technikerschule", Berufsoberschule", etc. After completing these trade-oriented schools, students are entitled to hold the title "Techniker", which qequalt to the advanced technical college entrance qualification, enabling them to be admitted to a Fachhochschule (university of applied sciences) if they apply for this.
Johannes Gleim Sep 2, 2023:
Sorry, the German term is "Elektrotechnik".
Cenk Başaran (asker) Aug 24, 2023:
Electroteknik was a typo, sorry You're right, it should have been "Elektroteknik"
Anyway, this is the school website: https://www.bea-hamburg.de/
This is the street address: Museumstraße 19, 22765 Hamburg
The certificates granted were of "Elektroanlagemonteur" and graduation.
Lancashireman Aug 24, 2023:
"University designations... ... differ from country to country"
Yes indeed. So what country does the statement below refer to?
"Nowadays, vocational schools do not educate engineers, only technicians"
Johannes Gleim Aug 23, 2023:
Cenk: Please provide more details You are right, vocational schools do not issue diplomas or similar certificates.
As an electrical engineer, I graduated with a degree in engineering from a university of applied sciences in Germany.
University designations differ from country to country, but the level of education should be the same worldwide.
Therefore, I ask to specify the country so that we can check the education system in that country. However, I doubt the name "Berufsfachschule für electrotechnik" (obviously a typo), because this is not correct German. Nowadays, vocational schools do not educate "engineers", only technicians, but this was common about 100 years ago. Can you please give us more details about the certificate, the name of the school, the country and the date of issue?

(vocational) diploma in electrical engineering

Schule doesn't mean school or college here - it means course.

In my example, it's a one- or two-year programme, so it's a diploma rather than a degree.

You could leave out "vocational", since people will be taking it to improve their job prospects rather than for fun.

This one is provided by Berufliches Schulzentrum Leonberg:

And this by Friedrich-Hecker-Schule:
Die **Berufsfachschule Elektrotechnik** gibt es an der Friedrich-Hecker-Schule in zwei Arten. Zum einen ist das die einjährige Berufsfachschule, eine Schulart, welche den Grundstein für die betriebliche Ausbildung legt. Sie wird von den Schülern besucht, die in den Ausbildungsbetrieben in der Region Sinsheim im Elektrobereich ausgebildet werden...

Full-time Vocational (BrE: City & Guilds) School of Electrical Engineering

Neither the first Discussion Entry, nor the question itself is particularly clear on what is 'taken from university'.

It's also a school or college *of*, rather than the prepositional Denglish of 'for'.

The term "vocational school" is also mentioned, but I would use this term for "Berufsschule"

German term (edited): Berufsfachschule/Berufliche Schule (für Elektrotechnik)

vocational school (for electrical engineering) with classes in in higher education

https://www.bea-hamburg.de/unsere-schule/

2. Realschule until grade 10 or 11 (with Mittlere Reife (or Realschulabschluss) as exit exam); students can then attend Berufsfachschule (full-time vocational schools[24]) or Fachoberschule for 2-3 years, which combines vocational school and an apprenticeship. In some regions there is Regionalschule, which is a combination of Realschule and Hauptschule. Pupils study for either 9 years, to obtain a qualification similar to the Hauptschulabschluss, or 10 years, to get the Mittlere Reife.

After children complete their primary education (at 10 years of age/grade 4, 12 year of age in Berlin and Brandenburg), there are four options for secondary schooling [23]:
1. Gymnasium (Germany) until grade 12 or 13 (with Abitur as exit exam, qualifying for university).
3. Hauptschule until grade 9, with an exam called the Hauptschulabschluss, to conclude. Afterwards, students can attend vocational schools.
4. Gesamtschule, which is a combination of the above, for 5-8 years, with a different qualification for different durations: 5 years for the Hauptschulabschluss; if a student opts for the longer 8 year program, they can take the gymnasium abitur exam, qualifying for university.
After passing through any of the above schools, pupils can start a career with an apprenticeship in the Berufsschule (vocational school). The Berufsschule is normally attended twice a week during a two, three, or three-and-a-half-year apprenticeship; the other days are spent working at a company. This is intended to provide a knowledge of theory and practice.
:
There is another type of university in Germany: the Fachhochschulen (Universities of Applied Sciences), which offer mostly the same degrees as Universitäten, but often concentrate on applied science (as the English name suggests)
:
Students wishing to attend a German Universität must, as a rule, hold the Abitur or a subject-restricted qualification for university entrance (Fachgebundene Hochschulreife). For Fachhochschulen, the Abitur, the Fachgebundene Hochschulreife certification or the Fachhochschulreife certification (general or subject-restricted) is required.
:
Those wishing to attend a university of applied sciences (Fachhochschule) must, as a rule, have Abitur, Fachhochschulreife, or a Meisterbrief.

Term: Berufsschule
Definition: school in which students are taught the skills needed to perform a particular job
Term: vocational school

Term: Berufsaufbauschule
Term: vocational college in higher education
https://iate.europa.eu/entry/result/1394033/de-en

Personal note: Myself, I made first an apprenticeship for electrician and attended a vocational school on evening courses, followed by the "Berufsaufbauschule" (vocational college in higher education) to achieve the "Fachhochschulreife" and qualified for studying at the university for applied sciences.

Conclusion: This vocational school has classes for higher education, but it does not name itself accordingly. The official translation remains 'vocational school'.

Personal note: I first completed an electrician apprenticeship and concurrently attended a vocational school in evening classes, then I attended a vocational college in higher education to obtain the university entrance qualification (Fachhochschulreife) and to qualify for studies at the University of Applied Sciences.

Conclusion: The vocational school has classes for the university entrance qualification, but does not call itself accordingly. The official translation is still "vocational school".
Peer comment(s):

disagree Schtroumpf : Neither Berufsschule nor Fachhochschule were to be translated here. Nor any "higher education" (???). The term is about some EQF level 4.

Wrong, the question was how to translate Berufsfachschule für electrotechnik", and that's what I did, taking into consideration my owns experiences, the BERUFLICHE SCHULE ALTONA and relevant references.
