Spanish term

profesor agregado

Spanish to English Social Sciences Education / Pedagogy Course description (Universidad de Chile)
¡Hola, colegas!

Saludos,
mew

Thank you so much, Myriam! You did a great job 😘

Continuing my response:
Assuming that the description below is correct for Chile, then profesor agregado = assistant professor and profesor auxiliar = adjunct professor

Myriam Seers Aug 26, 2022:
The three proposed translations are actually three different positions in Canadian universities, so it's important to understand what is meant in Chile by a "profesor agregado".
In Canada, there is a critical difference between an assistant professor and an adjunct professor: the assistant professor is a tenure-track position, whereas adjunct professor is not. Assistant professor is the entry-level position for professors with tenure track. Usually, this is the entry level after a person completed their PhD. They are then expected to become tenured within a period of time.

In contrast, as Ella noted, an adjunct professor is an external person to the faculty, not tenure-track, and under a contract with the university.

Some universities use the "lecturer" title to denote teaching positions that do not carry a research component, although it seems to me that "adjunct professor" is the more common usage in Canada.

So the answer is this: "associate professor" if you work for the university permanently and you are on tenure track; "adjunct professor" if you're on contract and not on tenure track.

Hi, Maria Eugenia! It's been a long time... Glad you have found my contribution helpful.
Note from asker:
Thank you, Barbara! I think Senior Lecturer is the best choice, although Adjunct Professor might also be correct.

adjunct professor

"Adjunct" professors are part-time, paid per class taught.

I found the hierarchy for Chile:
"Las cuatro jerarquías que comprende esta modalidad son: instructor, profesor adjunto, profesor agregado y profesor extraordinario. Solo los profesores extraor dinarios podrán ingresar a la planta de la universidad." (https://www.uchile.cl/documentos/descargar-texto-completo-en...

So the way I'm reading this, it specifically rules out any tenured title, i.e., not assistant professor or associate professor.
Example sentence:

Adjunct Professor duties in our department primarily involve graduate student supervision, but may also involve teaching (graduate and/or undergraduate) and service. Adjuncts may be contacted directly for more information about their research programs

Previous post on ProZ, link below: "I was a professor for 11 years - this is how we referred to adjunct instructors in Spanish."

agree ezpz : This one is better, I think - it's as formal as the source, with the correct meaning.

Tough one. I think you have to decide, given it is Chile to Canada.

Spanish term or phrase: Profesor Agregado (grado 4)
English translation: assistant professor, 4th degree
In the academic rank structure in the Central University of Venezuela, the “profesor agregado” is a degree/rank between “profesor asistente” (assistant professor) and “profesor asociado” (associate professor).

Maybe “assistant professor, 4th degree” is an approximate equivalent.

Academic ranks in Spain - Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academic_ranks_in_Spain
Only in the Basque Country and Catalonia there are 2 additional possibilities, according to relevant prevailing legislation:
Profesor Pleno/Catedràtic Contractat (tenured, full-time, not a civil servant, PhD required, accreditation required) (Translated in English CVs as "Full Professor").
**Profesor Agregado (tenured, full time, not a civil servant, PhD required, accreditation required). (Permanent position equivalent to Profesor Contratado Doctor, which is translated in English CVs as Associate Professor).**

Tough indeed! Thank you, Taña. There are Profesores Agregados and Profesores Adjuntos listed together...
