Arabic term

الرئيس القاضي

Arabic to English Social Sciences Government / Politics Yemen
Context: Book title - مذكرات الرئيس القاضي عبد الرحمن بن يحيي الإرياني، الجزء الأول

From my research, the title "الرئيس القاضي " is often used for Abdul Rahman al-Eryani. I'm having difficulty finding an English alternative though. Chief Judge, High Judge..?

ِAny help much appreciated!

He was a president, but ... but I'm not sure whether it's correct to translate the term into "President Judge":

President, President Qadi (or Qadhi)

Please note that the term القاضي was never an official part of this man's presidential title. It was used primarily as a term of honor and reverence for someone who had previously staked his prestige on his work in the judiciary.

In English sources, he is referred to as "President." His judicial career is not included in his title, and rightly so, although his judgeship is widely referenced whenever his career is discussed.

If you feel you must give deference to the term القاضي in your translation (for greater authenticity and faithfulness to the text, which is admirable), it would make better sense to stick to the Arabic term itself. You can render it "Qadi" or "Qadhi," as in:

"President Qadi Abdul Rahman al-Eryani."

"President Judge" will make no sense.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks for this! It seemed strange in English to mention both President and judge in the same title, so it is helpful to know that قاضي was not an official part of his title. I think 'President' alone will suffice in this context."

president judge

I am not sure but if you read his biography, you will find out that he was the President of Yemen too.

the president judge / Judge Abdulrahman Al-Eryani, President of northern Yemen

Abdulrahman Al-Eryani was the president of northern Yemen and also he was a judge.

we can't use chief judge which means: رئيس محكمة - رئيس القضاة

عبد الرحمن الإرياني، هو عبد الرحمن بن يحيى بن محمد بن عبد الله الإرياني، هو الرئيس الثالث للجمهورية العربية اليمنية

Judge and President

If used to strictly refer to titles.

(Also, since nearly all Yemeni sources refer to him as الرئيس القاضي while nearly all English sources refer to him simply as President, it may be of local significance which may or may not be relevant to the English translation, depending on the audience and degree of significance. It could be that he was also referred to in English inside Yemen as President Qadi which the Independant used in the title of his obtituary).
