Discussion

adel almergawy Jun 7, 2020:
@ Haneen Regardless the translation of the word spew( يستغل /يقذف ب ), the writer here criticizes and ridicules of those who exploit the repetition of the king to affect the other party who ask for some rights
ABDESSAMAD BINAOUI Jun 7, 2020:
@Haneen With more context, I have come to understand the sentence you first put here. In this case, you can use:
يستغلون مكانة كينج ويستعملونه كسلاح ضد الذين
Ludina Sallam Jun 7, 2020:
It is a fun discussion that you two are having, certainly! :) And it certainly helps with understanding and interpreting the text in general. But I still think the literal meaning of spew is what is meant here. What about ... Maybe this is not the best but something like it. All the best to you, and have fun with exploring the text!
Haneen Salameh (asker) Jun 7, 2020:
"Not by the same people" is a continuation of a previous sentence: Although uprisings are spearheaded by radicals, we are shut out of the public discussion. Neither the Black radical, nor Black radical thought is given air time. Instead, we are forced to endure being talked about and having the revolution we fought for be defused and repackaged to be palatable to a white liberal audience.
It cannot be narrated by the same people who - alongside their white liberal colleagues - jump Black radicals, beating us down with tired Martin Luther King Jr quotes in an attempt to discipline our anger and fix the boundaries of our action.
Not by the same people who spew King at every opportunity, wielding him as a cudgel against those whom they have trained in the belief that King is king and his word is law
ABDESSAMAD BINAOUI Jun 7, 2020:
@Haneen If the writer wanted to say that. S/he will not use:"not by the same people..."
Haneen Salameh (asker) Jun 7, 2020:
I agree with you. For some background context, King here refers to Martin Luther King. The text explains how a portion of white people tend to "spew" his sayings to convince black people that they're on their side. So much so, that they have ingrained King's sayings in black people through certain mediums such as schools and the media in order to pave the way for the neutralization of the black lives matter revolution.
ABDESSAMAD BINAOUI Jun 7, 2020:
Opposition "Not by the same people ........against..........." is a clear indication that there are 2 types of people as I said.
ABDESSAMAD BINAOUI Jun 7, 2020:
Hello @Ludina As I said there are the supporters and the opponents. That's what we are arguing about :).
Ludina Sallam Jun 7, 2020:
Hello Abdessamad and Haneen,
Since this is a rather poetic type of text, it is understandable that one would try to interpret the meaning. However, I think that the word simply means just what the definition says ("expel large quantities of something rapidly and forcibly"). The first sentence that comes to my mind is "He was spewing profanities" i.e. he was saying (probably shouting out) cuss words right and left. So here in the text he was just using the word "king" frequently and rapidly, almost as if the words he were spraying the word out of his mouth. I don't know how to translate this to Arabic.

English term (edited): spew King

To spew (something) is to eject it forcefully through an opening, such as a nozzle. In this context, what is being spewed is the name of MLK, and, of course, the name is being spewed through the mouth, as if the name of King were some sort of a fiery jet coming out a dragon. The name of MLK is so powerful in an argument that it merits such portrayal.

It is with this image in mind that I suggest

people who spew King

Both formulations would work, but you must include the word اسم because what is being spewed is the name.
