This translates to our product selling for $21.70 when built locally, which is a little above our design specification. However, we think we can cut down on this price using the ‘Green Hours’ system which eliminates labor costs by allowing members of the cooperative to earn their own chargers by working for the cooperative for a certain number of hours.

Under the Green Hours system, each woman earns one credit for every hour worked. The women can then redeem their hours to “purchase” items such as solar cookers, solar PV systems or other items donated to the group. The MST hold a Green Store once a month in which they sell the donated items such as clothes, bed linens, etc. . . The hours have a set value to the dollar and for the Green Store the donations are all given a price. Members have the option to purchase items with hours or with cash. The income that is generated from the Green Store is placed in a specific fund and used to buy items that are requested by members (i.e. mosquito nets, mattresses, pillows).
