cutting down to the wire

General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
Has been staying at Hamptons for 10 years:
I was headed into Chicago, I had to have this prototype sent to me
I was cutting down to the wire.
I arranged my flight and everything so that when morning Fedex would arrive, I could grab it, leave by ten to get to my 11:15 flight.
So I sat there in Hampton Midway, which is right on the street, and I’m waiting for the Fedex guy.

IMO, we have to translate "to cut down" as well as "down to the wire".
