Discussion

Dylan Edwards Jul 28, 2009:
εσταβλισµένη κτηνοτροφία (βοοειδή και χοίροι) - it was just a few examples of this kind (from minenv.gr and perhaps other sources) that gave me the impression, at first, that the term was used exclusively for cattle and pigs, but of course we shouldn't jump to that conclusion.
Laura Bodger (asker) Jul 28, 2009:
Thanks Dylan! I've found examples of "stabled cattle" and "stabled pigs" so I think I'll go with that, although to me "stable" suggests horses. Since the text doesn't specify what animals I don't think it's going to be possible to be more precise.

Dylan Edwards Jul 27, 2009:
ελεύθερης και εσταβλισμένης κτηνοτροφίας - I've found one example of this contrast. I'm not convinced it's as strong a contrast as "free-range and factory farming". I'm sure σταβλισμένος refers to where the animals are housed (I agree with Vassilios on this point, but would use "stable" only for horses), so it may be something like "grass (outdoor) rearing" and "barn rearing".
Dylan Edwards Jul 27, 2009:
Another form of σταβλισμένος (from στάβλος)? The word seems to be used with reference to cattle and pigs.

agree Philip Lees : I agree with 'stabled'. But 'pastured' means something quite different.

Thanks! Is "pastured animals" wrong here? What exactly is the connotation of "pastured animals"?
