French term

sciences de l'administration

French to English Bus/Financial Education / Pedagogy certificate
Hello,

I am translating a university certificate and have come across: maitrise en sciences de l'administration.

I am not sure what this subject area is in English - any ideas anyone?

Thanks you!

Discussion

PB Trans Jun 7, 2006:
You are correct about "administration des affaires" = "business administration".
PB Trans Jun 7, 2006:
Also, the official name is "Université Laval" and it is not translated. Cheers!
PB Trans Jun 7, 2006:
There is also "DEC/diplôme d'études collégiales" = diploma of collegial studies, granted by a CEGEP (Collège d'enseignement général et professionnel). CEGEP is after high school.
PB Trans Jun 7, 2006:
FYI: In Quebec a "bacc/baccalauréat" = bachelor's degree, "maîtrise" = master's degree, "diplôme d’études secondaires" = high school diploma.
Amy Christie (asker) Jun 6, 2006:
yes Canadian - University of Laval
Amy Christie (asker) Jun 6, 2006:
there also appears 'le grade de Maitre ès sciences' after 'maitrise en sciences de l'administration'.
writeaway Jun 6, 2006:
Is your doc Canadian?
Amy Christie (asker) Jun 6, 2006:
On a previous certificate for the same person, there was ' bacc. en administration des affaires', which I took to be 'business administration'.

agree writeaway : nice for Asker that someone has finally straightened this out.I found the Laval site but was too tired to read through all of it properly it seems.Got confused between name of school (Faculté) & name of degree.at least now it's 100% accurate.

agree Julie Barber : yes, I think that it can be misleading because administration in French usually refers to business administration/management. An administrator could be a director in this meaning not 'admin' staff

Master's [degree] of Business Administration

Since there is no context and background, this has to be a guess; there is an official degree like that, but I am not sure it fits your context. In translating certificates and degrees, it is always advisable to keep the opriginal in brackets, as the understanding of the exact title often varies from country to country. Maybe check in the kudoz glossary, too. It seems to me we had a similar question recently. All the best
