Subject to Richard's blessing: Remand in custody for trial
Non-ProZ.com Jul 14, 2005:
I agree. Do you have a suggestion?
Adrian MM. (X) Jul 12, 2005:
The glossary entry should be changed. The answer does not square even syntatically.

Peer comment(s):

agree Christian Schoenberg : I agree, but I believe one is usually "arraigned on [a certain charge]". In any event, although simpler is often better, one might also consider the more verbose: "He will be presented for arraignment tomorrow."

Not according to Engelsk Blå ordbok from Kunnskapsforlaget; Oslo- but thank you very much Christian Schoenberg
agree Suzanne Blangsted (X) : I agree with Christian's formulation of the text

Thank you very much BLANGSTED- see my comments to Christian
agree Vedis Bjørndal : often passive. He will be arraigned tomorrow on (charge)/for -ing

Takk så mye Vedis Bjørndal
disagree Richard Lawson : Kunnskapsforlagets Blå is perfectly adequate for school purposes, but not for professional translation work. My copy does not have "arraign", and correctly gives "custody" for "varetekt". It is a pity to have wrong answers in the glossary.

the 2002 edition, page 42
disagree Adrian MM. (X) : I still object. Arraignment does not imply custody in AAE = Anglo-Am law or the Brit. Commonwealth. Whatever the Nor process, an accused need be remanded neither on bail, nor in custody, during arraignment = taking of a not guilty/guilty plea.

Remand in custody

Arraignment is the court-trial stage for the formal taking of a plea (BE) or reading out of the charges (AE).

How can a suspect escape from an arraignment:

agree Richard Lawson : "framstille" means here "bring before the court" rather than "appear ..."

Thanks Richard. Sort of confirmation also comes from elsewhere: 'appearance in remand proceedings'. Could you pls. consider 'remand in custody for trial'; 'trial committal whilst in custody' for the glossary?
