Hi Boris Sep 5, 2006

Riiiiiight, I see what the problem is.
You have the "regular" Start Menu, while I changed my settings to the "Classic Start Menu." (I found the new Start Menu style very user-unfriendly when I upgraded to XP a few years ago, and switched back to the "Classic" style of previous Windows versions).
I know this wasn't the original objective, but if you want to give the Classic Start Menu a go and see what I'm seeing, go to:
Settings -> Control Panel -> Task Bar and [Start] Menu ->
... See more

From there, it should be a breeze to follow Jan's directions.
Otherwise, give Philippe's instructions a go
Good luck!

Thank you! Sep 6, 2006

That saved me a $500 investment. I owe you one, Jan!

Hi all,

What most users don't know is that this is actually already a built in function in Office! At least in the recent versions (Office 2000/2003).

So no need for third-party downloads!

I only have a Swedish version here, but it's located at this path:
Start Menu > Create New Office Document > Other Documents > Conversion Wizard.

It will take care of txt batches, as well as some other common formats.

Now I found it also from the new start menu Sep 6, 2006

Go to Start > all programs > New office file
and the same box opens, where you switch to "other files".
Interesting, I would never have guessed what it does.
Probably there are still hundreds of functions to discover in my computer.

Or from within Word... Sep 6, 2006

Click on File and then on New.
Click on New from template in the New Document pane.
Open the Other Documents tab.
Click on the Batch Conversion Wizard icon and follow the instructions.

Regards,
Gerard

Thanks Kathy, but "Create New Office Document" isn't in Classic Start Menu either: now I remembered that I removed that option from the menu after installation because I thought I would never need it.

BTW:

1) There is an easier way to switch between Classic and XP Start Menus: right-click Start > Properties.

2) My opinion is opposite to yours: I think that XP Start Menu is more userfriendy than the Classic one.

Another way to access this wizard if you removed the default shortcut New office Document in the Start menu of Windows:
in Word 2003, click File>New. In the right pane that appears, click On my computer>Other Documents tab>File conversion wizard.

Thanks Philippe,

This way I've managed to do it. I would only add that the wizard is called Batch Conversion Wizard not File Conversion Wizard.

Thanks to all for the help and to Jan for the great tip!
