"GymRat" Mar 15, 2006

I haven't been spending as much time at the gym lately, but I get up as early as possible (5:30-6:30) depending on the workload schedule for the day and head out to the gym.

I've been trying to get into running since last August and I can now say that I've made some progress... For someone who could only go on running for 1/4 mile (400m) before passing out, I can now do 1.5 mile (2.4km) in 17 minutes. I know it's not good enough, but I'm hoping to get to 3 miles (5km) without dying

I've been trying to get into running since last August and I can now say that I've made some progress... For someone who could only go on running for 1/4 mile (400m) before passing out, I can now do 1.5 mile (2.4km) in 17 minutes. I know it's not good enough, but I'm hoping to get to 3 miles (5km) without dying, since my parents signed me up for a 5k running competition in my hometown, which will conveniently take place exactly at the same time we're stopping by for a visit on the week of my birthday... Hey, my parents are in their 50's and just finished a 30km (18 3/4 miles) in 3 hours, so the least I can do is try to focus and run for about 35 minutes and make them proud, uh?

Besides running from here to there and managing to stay alive, I've gone back to doing about 300-500 abs a day and lifting weights. And whenever I have another half-an-hour to spare, I also enjoy the stair climber, because I can get a great cardio workout and enjoy a book at the same time.

Well, all I can say is that immigration can be really tough on you — about 50lbs / 20kg tough on you... I'm doing it to get back in shape (and soon get used to a 9-month round shape when we have kids), get the blood flowing on these legs (sitting at the computer doesn't do your limbs any good), and maybe look as good as I used to when I first became a gymrat 10 years ago...

Wish me good luck!

Footie Mar 15, 2006

To keep healthy, I play football in a Women's team. The season is starting again soon so we have trainings three times a week (Monday, Thursday: 1h - Wednesday: 1h30). Then the games at the weekend.
And I try to play tennis on Friday nights.

Otherwise, I really really get crazy not going out all day long! It's not about meeting people but having some fresh air (and wet here in Ireland...) and relaxing.

You forget about everything else when you're focused on tackling someone, building the game or defending your butt up, don't you think?

Salsa and Pilates Mar 15, 2006

I take Salsa classes with a dance teacher at home, twice a week for an hour and a half, and also do Pilates gym three times a week with a personal trainer.

I feel fine with both.

Actually it hardly constitutes exercise unless you really open up.

Bellydancing and Pilates Mar 15, 2006

The former is for my love for dancing and Arabic music; the latter is necessary to keep the muscles supple after lots of hip drops!

Pumping iron Mar 15, 2006

I would love to keep up my martial arts, but my conference schedule keeps me running out of town so I had to find a way to stay fit with solo sports. I go to the pool 2/3 times a week and I turned my house into a gym so I can exercise whenever I feel like it -which is quite often, sitting in front of that monitor drives me nuts!

Well it’s kitin’ isn’t it? Mar 15, 2006

And the more you do it, the more it gets good to you, until you end up putting yourself in no-way-out situations in Sardinia holding onto an extremely powerful traction kite while it’s blowin’ a gale with huge waves tryin’ to eatcha, and ending up on the rocks.
Which is why I’m laid up on the sofa at the mo feeling not very fit at all, but I’ll be back.
Gee those rocks are sharp, me wettie looks like it was eaten by a shark.

Maybe I should take up belly dancing

Weights Mar 15, 2006

I keep a multigym weight kit in the study and intersperse sets with bursts of work during the afternoon. Even someone with my pitiful physical co-ordination can learn how to do this without injury or embarrassment. Team sports are ruled out on the basis that I would be a liability to any team that wasn't trying very hard to lose.

No time.....:( Mar 15, 2006

I garden....and now spring is slowly showing up so I guess it's time to dust off the gardening gloves and start digging!
Other than that, not much, take my little dog for a short walk if I have time and I vacuum!! Living in a three story house gives me plenty of staris to walk up and down.....and carrying the vacuum adds to that!!!

Pilates / cycling Mar 15, 2006

I did realize that when I started to have the workplace at home I tended to get a bit lazy.

After I 'grew' two dress sizes I decided to do something about it. I started with Callanetics, now I am doing Pilates, walk everywhere and cycle.

I think it is very important to not suffer the effects of lazyness when one gets older and did not do anything about it. And it is also a welcome break from the computer!...

social sports? Mar 15, 2006

I was wondering too about the low level of participation in social sports...and thought initially that maybe it's cos we're a bunch of loners

...but now think it's becuase of our irreglar lifestyle...with a deadline looming and last minute problems cropping up, we'd possibly let the side down with team sports.....:-)

I walk and cycle sporadically, and will soon start going for the odd horse ride, that's cos those are my fave activities

I also adore tennis,

I also adore tennis, but always seem to have tennis injuries...but maybe will try again (I love badminton too, but unfortunately it's not that usual in Spain)

And about 3-4 days a week, for the sake of my health (esp. back and right arm, which are beginning to suffer from keyboarding), I go for a swim, then have a short session in the sauna and/or jacuzzi.

Cycling Mar 15, 2006

I cycle - I have a lovely LeMond road racer - and though I often set out on my own, cycling isn't too unsoical, as other lone cyclists sometimes join for a few miles. And nothing better than high speed on the open road...!

Gym--can't motivate myself at home Mar 15, 2006

Good for you, James! I have exercise machines but never use them. Anything (other than translating!) that i can do at home, any time, ends up not being done. So I go to Curves, a gym for women, 3-5 times a week. Since it's all women and some are even less coordinated than I, there's no embarrassment. Yes, going there takes time out of my morning, but I can't think creatively before noon anyway so I might as well work out, get the mail, have some lunch and then get started on my day.

VERY IMPORTANT: I set a timer for 45 minutes (55 if I'm doing a rush job) and **make** myself get up and walk around every time it rings. The hard part is not walking around directly to the refrigerator!
