Recently, our Russian-speaking colleagues were in search of a better translation for \"bublitchki\" (lit. \"bagels\"). \"Bagel\" is not the only word borrowed from Yiddish.

In the list I have just found there are over 120 of them:

Last year, my son\'s school was renting a part of the premises of a Jewish day care center, and on the bathroom door there was a sign \'Please leave your tallils in the hall\'.

My son would tell me every day, \"I did it again - went to the bathroom with all my tallils, \'cause I can\'t figure what exactly they want me to leave in the hall, hope not my pants.\" Do you know what\'s that?

I am not an authority on these, can only think of a spelling error:



(singular) Tallis

(plural) Tallitot

[A prayer shawl.]





Slightly away from Yiddish, but never mind.

(plural) Taliyot (how do you like this one? -checked my sources)



a letter T can be easily misread as L (or may be I am just blind)



Badly formed plurals of borrowed words could be the subject of another chat...
