We shouldn’t be too quick to judge. We all make misrakes. Take the sentence below. It doesn’t make sense, yet we all know what the author is trying to say.


Whilst a translator may not necessarily need to be well-read or highly literate, they may be competent enough to translate simple texts; but if they cannot even write in their own native language without making basic mistakes again and again, it must surely generate all kinds of problems that no spellchecker could ever resolve.

I agree Teresa. As someone with a language degree, translation degree and a purely linguistic background, I'm familiar with translation theories and the intricacies of the latest CAT tools but I have no real knowledge or experience of any other fields or subject areas, which I've found is a problem for me in the industry.

The overarching areas of specialisation (legal, tourism, medical, etc.) are all touched upon at university but in no real depth, unfortunately. That's the issue with a one-year translation degree: it's just not enough time for adequate preparation in my view.

A definite answer may not be fair in this case. It is true that today's translators have more resources and are lucky enough to have the opportunity to be qualified than older translators like me. On the other hand, may be increase of enrolling have effect on the standards for degree receipt and therefore getting a decree is easier today and moreover many new translators tend to rely intensively on support of machine translation.
