みなさん、こんばんは。
私は海外の会社から、翻訳の他にチェック＆エディティングの仕事も受けています。

私は海外の会社から、翻訳の他にチェック＆エディティングの仕事も受けています。
最近4時間で20枚チェックとエディットをするという仕事を受けました。その前には、同じ会社から30分でパワーポイントの翻訳を15枚チェック＆エディットするという仕事がきました。両方とも、時間内に出さないといけないので大急ぎでしましたが満足のいくものはできませんでした。というより、とても大変だったので後で熱が出るほどでした。
訳漏れ、誤字等をチェックするだけならいいのですが、業界用語を調べたり、文体を直したりするには、明らかに短すぎる時間です。
日本以外の国(英語圏）では、このような短期間でチェックとエディットをすることが普通だと考えられているのでしょうか?
（ちなみに、このような状態で、もし最終的な翻訳物にクレームが来れば、翻訳者もチェッカーも5割ずつ減給されます。）
海外の会社でチェックとエディットをされている方に、状況をうかがいたいと思います。どうぞよろしくお願いします。 ▲ Collapse

You have a degree from one of the best universities in Japan, and you also have 25 years of experience (according to your profile). Why do you think translators from outside of Japan are able to produce quality at speeds that are several times over what you consider normal, and what you are used to when working with Japanese companies?

The conditions you described are absolutely ridiculous, you should not accept jobs like this at all. They clearly don't want quality, they just want you to take the blame (and accept a 20% cut) in case the client complains.
I have a feeling that the translation jobs you are getting from this company are also paid at ridiculous rates.
Please stop doing this. You are hurting yourself and hurting the market, too.
I do a fair amount of editing, and I can edit about 700-800 words per hour if it is a good translation. If it is an excellent translation, I may be able edit 1000 words/hour, but this is very rare. I have to do documented edit, where I have to comment on each mistake and categorize them according to a standard. A simple edit would go somewhat faster, but not at the speeds you were required to work.
Again, the only way to stop outsourcers from doing these things is to stop taking these "jobs". You are a freelancer, not an employee, you can decide what type of jobs you want to do. Please refuse jobs that don't make sense.

その会社は、翻訳料金が良く、翻訳の納期も普通で、対応や支払いもしっかりしていた有名な会社だったので、あの2件のチェックとエディットを引き受けてしまったのです。それがその会社では普通であると思ってしまったのです。しかし今改めて考えると、実に無謀な納期だったと思います。
私は、これまでアジアの会社と英語圏の他の会社で、チェックとエディットの仕事をしたことがあります。それらの会社では、納期はずっと長く楽でしたし、万が一お客様からクレームが来た場合はいきなり翻訳者（50％）とチェッカー（50％）から減額するのではなく、お客様からのクレーム内容を確かめてやり直しをする規則になっていました。
これからは、自分で妥当であると思った条件の仕事を受注したいと思います。
無謀な納期での仕事を私が引き受けることで、会社がこれからもそのような普通ではありえない納期で他のチェッカーにも仕事を出し続けるとしたら、他のチェッカーの方に対しても申し訳ありません。

And the translation company has an obligation to explain this to their clients. If they cannot be made to see the light, then simply refuse to take the jobs! Please. Accepting such jobs only exacerbates the downward spiral of translation fees, and the quality of life for translators (and translation companies too, in the long run). In fact, it could just be an underhanded way for the client or translation company to get dirt cheap translations. It’s an unreasonable, arbitrary and dangerous agreement that you should stay clear of.
The kind of work you describe would often warrant an extra fee for extra speed. But even if they promised to pay you twice your normal rate, the moment they cut your fees by 50% you would only earn the same as what you normally earn, i.e., you would’ve ended up working under extreme pressure for nothing. Of course, in your case you would be much worse off, because presumably you were offered NO extra fee.

ここ2か月間悩んでいた気持ちが晴れました。

そして、この仕事について考えた時に思い出したのは、TOEICのリスニングテストです。ものすごいスピードで次から次へと問題を解き、しかも完ぺきを求められる…そんな感じです。30分ならまだしも、4時間はきつすぎました。
やはり仕事は、自分が納得のいく完成したものを出したいと思いますので、急がされて思い残すような点がいく点もあるような仕事はしたくありません。やはりみなさんのおっしゃるように断るべきでした。
