The treaties on double-taxation prevent you from having to pay in BOTH countries, but in general it is not your choice where you pay, and you cannot evade taxes based on these treaties. I believe if you live in England, you have to pay in England, based on the English rates. In case you had to pay some taxes in Japan (somebody withheld it or something), then you can claim that amount against your tax payments, but if the rates are lower there, you would have to pay the difference. This usually results in increased paperwork, and increased fees for your accountant... At least this is my understanding, but you should talk to a qualified accountant. Katalin ▲ Collapse

Since it took a while for my post to be approved, I have now spoken to my accountant and he told me pretty much what Katalin said - if you pay tax in another country where the tax rate is lower, you will then need to pay the difference where you live.
Nevertheless, thanks for your replies!
