I have been out of the translation business for a couple of years and I am now investigating the possibility of freelancing from the Republic of Cyprus. Does anybody know if self-employed translators in Cyprus must apply VAT to their charges, or can very small businesses elect to be VAT-exempt? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

According to the New legislation of the Republic of Cyprus (VAT Law 95(I)2000)which came into effect on 1 February 2002, you will be subject to VAT registration only if your annual income exceeds CYP9,000.
Hope this will help you.
Best Regards Emmanouil TYRAKIS
