I am a university graduate (BA, MA) of University College London, holding two first class degrees (a Bachelors and a Masters degree) in Scandinavian language, history and culture. I am a highly competent, conscientious and circumspect translator of all five Scandinavian languages (Danish, Swedish, Norwegian, Icelandic and Faroese), having studied them all as part of my two degrees. I also undertake back-translation and proof-reading of texts translated from these languages to English.
My first degree included a dedicated course in Translation from the Scandinavian Languages. I have particular experience in reading and translating often highly technical academic texts, and of colloquial language usage (both spoken and written), and am as a consequence especially confident of my ability to translate these kinds of text.
I have most in-depth experience of working with Norwegian and Danish, having spent a year or more residing in each of these countries. Norwegian was my main language as an undergraduate, I studied it for four years including a year as an exchange student at the University of Tromsø.
I subsequently lived for a period of fourteen months in Copenhagen, Denmark. I have also spent time in Sweden and Iceland, and have read extensively in their respective languages, for academic purposes. I furthermore have extensive experience with imaginative literature written in all five Nordic languages.
I studied Faroese translation and linguistics under Michael Barnes, who is recognised in the Faroe Islands as the living British expert on the Faroese language. I have been studying both Modern and Old Icelandic for the whole of my academic career, and have taught the latter subject to both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
