Summer in the city. “Long-lasting heat, the sun beating down, not enough shade, not enough freshness
– there are days, even weeks in the summer when you are truly suffering,” sums up an older lady on
why summer in Prague is unbearable for her.
Have you ever imagined you can’t walk fast from one patch of shade to another, or that you are
simply not that resistant to heat exposure and it exhausts you? This is how the elderly and other
vulnerable groups experience heat waves in a city that is not adapted to their needs. The most
frequent manifestation of the climate crisis on an urban level are heat waves and the corresponding
urban heat island (UHI) effect.
The UHI effect occurs on the surfaces of urbanized areas that cannot absorb the heat due to a lack of
vegetation, soil and/or water. The surface then accumulates heat and significantly increases the
temperature of the surroundings.1
Glass bus stops with metal benches on hot concrete, parking lots in front of supermarkets with no
shade, town squares and streets without trees – these places reveal the weak spots of urban planning
which has left out vulnerable groups of inhabitants such as elderly people.

Adapting urban areas to the climate crisis while taking into consideration vulnerable groups should be
common practice in urban planning. It would be sufficient to use well-known adaptation measures
such as the extension of urban vegetation, planting trees in exposed areas, placing benches in the
shade and making services, institutions and public transport more accessible.

Léto ve městech. „Nekonečná vedra, pražící slunce, nedostatek stínu a čerstvého vzduchu – v létě jsou
dny i týdny, kdy opravdu trpíte,“ shrnuje starší dáma, proč je pro ni léto v Praze nesnesitelné.
Umíte si představit, že nedokážete rychle přejít z jednoho stínu do druhého, nebo že nejste tak odolní
vůči teplu a vyčerpává vás? Takto zažívají vlny veder starší lidé a další zranitelné skupiny ve městě,
které není přizpůsobené jejich potřebám. Nejčastějším projevem klimatické krize ve městě jsou vlny
veder a s nimi efekt tepelného ostrovu.
K efektu dochází na povrchu urbanizovaných oblastí, který nedokáže absorbovat teplo kvůli chybějící
vegetaci, pudě anebo vodě. Ve městě se pak nahromadí teplo a výrazně zvýší teplotu okolního
prostředí.
Zasklené autobusové zastávky s kovovými lavičkami, parkoviště u supermarketu bez zastřešení,
náměstí a ulice bez stromů – tato místa odhalují slabiny strategického plánu rozvoje měst, který
vynechal zranitelné skupiny obyvatel, jako jsou starší lidé.

Přizpůsobovaní městských oblastí klimatické krizi a zároveň i zranitelným skupinám by mělo být běžnou
součástí strategického plánu rozvoje měst. Stačilo by použít dobře známá opatření, jako jsou rozšíření
městské vegetace, sázení stromů v nechráněných částech, umístění laviček do stínu a zajištění lepší
přístupnosti služeb, institucí a veřejné dopravy.
