I was born and raised in Algeria, where speaking another language beside your native one is expected and encouraged, which is exactly what I did. But I wanted to go further than that. I wanted to bridge the gap between native Arabic speakers and English speakers through the noble and troublesome trade of translation. I set out to do that by first translating a novel into English, and while it is generally frowned upon to translate into your non-native language, I had much to learn from that experience.
In the past year, I've been charged with translating legal documents, namely civil status documents, terms and conditions of services and privacy policies. I was also responsible for the localization of website content and copy, proofreading, and advising on matters relating to RTL (right-to-left) design in Figma (a design tool) and Arabic dubbed videos.
