Source text - English A journey of an hour lay ahead, and they speeded up through the sprawling outskirts; the road began to climb. When she was sure that the driver did not want conversation she eased herself back in her seat.
There were two types of taxi man: the garrulous ones with a niece in Dagenham, who wanted to talk right the way out to the far coast and the national park, and the ones who needed every grunt racked out of them, who wouldn't tell you where their niece lived if they were under torture. She made one or two tourist remarks: how had the weather been? "Raining. Now I smoke," the man said. He thrust a cigarette right from the packet into his mouth, juggling a lighter and at one point taking his hands from the wheel entirely.
He drove very fast, treating each swerve in the road as a personal insult, fuming at any hold up. She could feel Phil's opinions banking up behind his teeth: now that won't do the gearbox any good, will it? At first, a few cars edged past them, creeping down to the lights of the town. Then the traffic thinned and petered out. As the road narrowed, black and silent hills fell away behind them. Phil began to tell her about the flora and fauna of the high maquis.
She had to imagine the fragrance of herbs crushed underfoot. The car windows were sealed against the still, cool night, and she turned her head deliberately away from her husband and misted the glass with her breath. The fauna was mostly goats. They tumbled down the hillsides, stones cascading after them, and leapt across the path of the car, kids running at their heels. They were patched and parti-coloured, fleet and heedless. Sometimes an eye gleamed furtive in a headlight. She twitched at the seatbelt, which was sawing into her throat. She closed her eyes.
Translation - German Sie hatten eine einstündige Fahrt vor sich und sie fuhren immer schneller durch die Vororte. Die Straße wand sich bergauf. Als sie sicher war, dass der Fahrer keine Konversation betreiben wollte, lehnte sie sich entpannt in ihrem Sitz zurück.
Es gibt zwei verschiedene Arten von Taxifahrern: Die geschwätzigen mit einer Nichte in London, die auf der gesamten Fahrt zur Küste und zum Nationalpark reden wollten, und dann gab es die Fahrer, denen man jeden einzelnen Grunzer mühsam abringen muss, die nicht mal unter Folter erzählen würden, wo ihre Nichte lebt. Sie machte ein oder zwei Touri-Kommentare. „Wie war das Wetter so in letzter Zeit?“ „Regen. Jetzt rauche ich.“, sagte der Mann. Er schleuderte eine Zigarette direkt aus der Schachtel in den Mund, spielte mit dem Feuerzeug und nahm einmal sogar kurz beide Hände vom Lenkrad.
Er fuhr sehr schnell, fasste jeden Schlenker in der Straße als persönliche Beleidigung auf, schäumte bei jeder Behinderung vor Wut. Sie konnte fühlen, dass Phil schon mehrere Bemerkungen auf der Zunge lagen: "Na, das ist aber nicht so gut für das Getriebe, oder?" Am Anfang fuhren noch einige wenige Autos an ihnen vorbei, hinunter zu den Lichtern der Stadt. Dann wurde der Verkehr immer weniger und flaute schließlich ganz ab. Die Straße wurde immer schmaler und in ihrem Rücken fielen stille Berge steil ab. Phil begann, ihr Flora und Fauna in den hohen Ebenen der Macchie zu erklären.
Ihr kam der Geruch von Kräutern in den Sinn, wie sie unter Stiefeln zerquetscht werden. Die Autofenster sperrten die ruhige, kalte Nacht aus. Sie wandte sich bewusst von ihrem Mann ab und ließ die Fensterscheibe durch ihren Atem beschlagen. Die Fauna bestand hauptsächlich aus Ziegen. Sie stolperten die Steilwände hinunter, Steine kollerten hinter ihnen hinab. Sie sprangen vor Autos über die Straße, ihre Jungen folgten ihnen auf dem Fuße. Sie waren gefleckt und gescheckt, flink und unachtsam. Hin und wieder blitzte ein Auge verstohlen im Scheinwerferlich auf. Sie zog an ihrem Gurt, der in ihren Hals einschnitt. Sie schloß die Augen.
