I like using two screens. But, I also like using three screens, if it's two with a desktop and the third being the laptop. My family likes to tease me about the setup. | | | carolvitti Brazilië Local time: 21:11 Engels naar Portugees
As I got 1 laptop I use at least 4 screens.

Perhaps certain professions need 2 monitors (graphic designers, for instance) but I don't think translators needs require more than 1 monitor.
for example, for translating a manual for a TV or an agricultural machine I get a few references PDFs + one main PDF document, 2 or more glossaries in XLS format, directions in Word, then I have a main window open in a CAT tool (mostly Trados). Then internet browser, dictionary(ies), Outlook, Skype and more. I know that I can minimize these windows in to the bar and switch among them, but that's quite inconvenient and time consuming since I use all of them frequently. I cannot imagine to handle all of these windows on one screen.

This poll, or a slight variation on it has been asked 6+ times in the past few years with practically identical results each time. ...whilst I do agree that it would be interesting to see this same poll asked in time with technological changes taken into account, it really shouldn't be asked every few months, ask again in 5, 10 years and the results may be more illuminating rather than repetitive.

I'm afraid I must disagree, Yaotl. Some time ago I had the chance to work with two screens, and it's really so much more comfortable. Nowadays I only use my 15" laptop, and I miss the good times! May be I grew a bit picky, but I think a 17" screen would be more comfortable too.
Except when I have to run the cat tool on the PC. In which case, I use 2, since I still search faster on the Mac. The diacritics are simply much easier to type. Perhaps this should be a once a year poll to see how the technology is tending? | | | Dreamland. :) | Feb 15, 2012 |

Have three "big" monitors, 32" and it is sooo convienent to use. If you sit 14 - 16 hours a day in front of your monitor working then I want some comfort. And, as mentioned all the reference material, etc. you need nowadays, I can spread them all over the place | | | Mario Chavez (X) Local time: 20:11 Engels naar Spaans + ... Alma de Kok wrote: Did you clean your desk before taking the picture? Or does it look this way allways?? I'm impressed. I use two 24" monitors on a very messy corner desk, my wireless keyboard and mouse rest on a sliding shelve under my desk. Regards, Alma At first, I thought half of the respondents worked with just one monitor. Thanks for the support, Alma! I've been using two monitors for some years now, although the recent 2x23 inches is the one I'm most proud of. These are IPS monitors (not just your average LCD screen), costing a bit more. The reason is that I do desktop publishing on the side and the right color calibration is important. Plus, I can watch HD movies on them as well. This topic gives me an idea for a poll...
