Translation - English This booklet was created to mark the end of my seven years of study in Japan and provide an overview of the work that I have done thus far. As I performed the task of looking back on these artworks, a flood of memories came rushing forth and eventually swallowed me, to the point that I ceased work and merely sat in a daze. It hit me then that I had spent the last seven years of my 20’s in Japan. For all the many things that I learned from my instructors and the many good times I
experienced, there were also periods of despair. All those experiences, both the positive and the not-sopositive, combined to encourage my growth. I will carry that legacy with me and take courage from it
as I now approach the age of 30.

Source text - Japanese 日本画の基底材の代表である「和紙」は日本に古くから伝わる紙で、楮、三椏、雁皮の植物繊維を主な原料とする。和紙の特徴は強度、耐久性、柔軟性、安定性、保存性の高さ。それによって文化財の修復にも世界中で使用されている。上質な和紙を作るには、良質の水が必要となる。手漉き和紙は日本の伝統工芸品である。
Translation - English Washi, literally translated as “Japanese Paper”, is Nihonga’s most prominent base material and a variety of paper that has been in use in Japan since ancient times. Its main components are fibers from kozo (Japanese mulberry bark), as well as the plants mitsumata and ganpi. The main features of washi are its strength, durability, flexibility, stability and preservability. For those reasons, it is used throughout the world for restoration of cultural artifacts. Creation of excellent washi requires high-quality water. As a handwoven paper, its creation can also be considered a traditional Japanese craft.

Bio
I am a freelance translator based in Japan with fifteen total years of experience, including six as a freelancer and eight as an in-house translator/bi-lingual coordinator. In addition to my Japanese language skills, I have a background in English literature and spent several years working in the art world for a Japanese contemporary artist. Although this was a fairly specialized genre, the work was done in an office environment and I gained experience translating and coordinating in both languages, as well as extensive exposure to Japanese office culture and various professional contexts. As a freelancer, I have focused on visual media, especially subtitling, while also doing document translation and continuing my work in art or marketing related fields. I also have experience doing back editing for the medical industry, contract translation, proofreading, and other language related tasks.
