Nowadays I prefer to quote on a per-project basis, but usually my rates for translation agencies for law projects range from 0.08 EUR (plain jobs ) to 0.13 EUR (more complex jobs). Hope this helps...

Some official metrics to start from Nov 17, 2018

In Portuguese-speaking Brazil, documents in a foreign language are required by law (ancient, dated 1943 AD) to have a sworn translation attached in order to be accepted for any legal/official purpose.

I've explained the entire setup in English at http://www.lamensdorf.com.br/sworn-translation.html

Relevant points here are:
    • The system covers sworn translation FROM Portuguese into foreign languages; acceptance outside Brazil is up to the destination country's authorities; most EN-speaking countries DO accept them.
    • Rates are statutory and statewide, they vary to some extent from one state to another. Payment is net COD.
    • Everything is in hard copy (the 1943 law precedes - by decades - not only Computer Age, but fax and copying machines as well).
    • The sworn translator must keep physical books with all the sworn translations s/he's done so far.

Focusing exclusively on strictly 'legal' documents, a sworn translation from Portuguese into English done in the Sao Paulo state, must cost BRL 86.24 per "lauda" (standard page) of finished translation. One such "lauda" in the Sao Paulo state corresponds roughly to 200 words (I'm oversimplifying here).

Using the current exchange rate of USD 1 = BRL 3.50, we'd have:
    [BRL 86.24 / 200 words] / BRL 3.50 = USD 0.12/word

So this is what it would cost to get an "official" (i.e. "sworn") translation in Sao Paulo state, Brazil of a legal document, often accepted by English-speaking countries' authorities.

Here you have a possible maximum figure. Of course, you won't have to deal with printing and record-keeping costs (postage of hard copy is at the customer's expense), and you won't be legally liable for your translations, so you can go down a bit, if you wish.

    NOTES:
This Sao Paulo state rate has been in effect since January 2017, so it may be adjusted at any time.
Rio de Janeiro state has adjusted its rates in September 2018. There it would cost (using the same calculation above) USD 0.13/word. ▲ Collapse
