If you’re a science fiction fan, you probably daydreamed about smart homes way before they existed. Smart fridges, coffee pots and air conditioning units are now real and form just a tiny part of a sprawling network of countless devices with as many potential security issues. These issues have been exploited in high-profile attacks such the Mirai incident that cut off parts of the United States from the internet for almost a day.
So, I have vulnerable devices in my home. Who cares?
When compromised, IoT devices give cyber-criminals access to important private information, depending on what the device was designed to do. Compromised smart baby monitors allow hackers to eavesdrop on or talk with children; security cameras offer them a 24-hour live feed of your home, virtually eliminating your privacy.
But not just the device owner stands into harm’s way by unknowingly harboring vulnerable devices. Most of the time, the devices are used as a weapon against other innocent targets. Cyber-criminals amass armies of compromised devices, or botnets, and use them to deal devastating blows to infrastructure in coordinated DDoS attacks and prevent services or business from operating. This is how the Mirai incident in 2016 became possible.

Dacă ești fan al genului științifico-fantastic, este posibil să fi visat la locuințele inteligente încă dinainte ca acestea să fi apărut. Frigiderele, filtrele de cafea și aparatele de aer condiționat inteligente reprezintă acum o realitate și constituie doar o mică parte a imensei rețele de dispozitive care, pe cât sunt de multe, pe atât sunt de numeroase problemele de securitate care le pot afecta. Aceste probleme au fost exploatate în cazul unor atacuri cunoscute, precum incidentul Mirai, care a blocat accesul la internet al dispozitivelor din SUA timp de aproape o zi întreagă.
Da, dispozitivele mele sunt vulnerabile. Dar cui îi pasă?
După ce au fost compromise, dispozitivele IoT permit infractorilor cibernetici să acceseze informații importante cu caracter personal, în funcție de scopul pentru care a fost creat dispozitivul. Odată compromise, monitoarele inteligente pentru bebeluși permit hackerilor să tragă cu urechea sau să le vorbească copiilor; camerele de supraveghere le oferă posibilitatea de a-ți urmări locuința permanent, eliminând practic în totalitate intimitatea ta.
Însă nu doar deținătorul dispozitivelor este expus pericolului din cauza utilizării unor dispozitive despre care nu știe că sunt vulnerabile. De cele mai multe ori, dispozitivele sunt folosite pe post de arme împotriva victimelor nevinovate. Infractorii cibernetici acumulează numeroase dispozitive compromise sau botnet-uri și le utilizează pentru a lansa lovituri devastatoare asupra infrastructurilor prin atacuri DDoS coordonate, împiedicând funcționarea serviciilor și companiilor. Așa se explică incidentul Mirai din 2016.
