라벤더 (LAVANDULA OFFICINALIS)
Lavender has long been used by herbalists as a treatment for anxiety, nervous exhaustion, and depression. Recently, this traditional treatment has been verified in a double-blind clinical trial.⁶³ The findings of the study indicated that taking a moderate amount of lavender can reduce feelings of depression, anxiety, and helplessness. In the study, 45 adults between the ages of 18 and 54 who were diagnosed with depression were assigned to one of three groups. The groups received either (1) lavender extract plus a placebo tablet, (2) a placebo plus 100mg per day of the antidepressant drug imipramine, or (3) lavender extract and 100mg per day of imipramine. The study lasted for four weeks and scores from the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HAM-D, a questionnaire used to evaluate the severity of depression, where higher scores suggest more severe depression) were evaluated initially and then weekly after the start of treatment. What the results indicated was that the lavender extract was just as effective as the drug, but without the side effects common to drug treatment for depression (dry mouth, weight loss or weight gain, low blood pressure, arrhythmias, and decreased sexual function).
Translation - Korean 오래전부터 약초를 다루는 사람들은 라벤더를 불안, 신경쇠약, 우울증을 다스리는 데 사용했다. 최근에 라벤더를 사용하는 이러한 전통 치료법의 효과가 입증됐다. 적정량의 라벤더를 섭취하여 우울감과 불안감, 무력감을 줄일 수 있다는 연구 결과가 나왔다. 연구는 이중맹검 임상시험으로 진행되어 우울증을 앓고 있는 18세에서 54세 사이의 성인 45명이 각각 세 그룹으로 나뉘어 4주 동안 첫 번째 그룹은 위약(가짜 약)과 라벤더 추출물을 섭취, 두 번째 그룹은 위약과 항우울제인 이미프라민을 매일 100mg 복용했으며 세 번째 그룹은 라벤더 추출물과 이미프라민을 매일 100mg 복용했다. 해밀턴 우울증 평가척도(HAM-D, 우울증 중증도를 평가하는 질문서. 점수가 높을수록 우울증 정도가 높다고 판단한다)는 치료 전 시행하고 치료 시작 후에는 매주 시행하였다. 연구 결과, 라벤더 추출물은 이미프라민만큼 효과가 있었지만 우울증 치료제에서 흔히 발생하는 부작용인 입 마름, 체중 변화, 저혈압, 부정맥, 성 기능 저하는 나타나지 않았다.
