The path to earning the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree is not easy. The preparation begins in high school and continues through college and graduate study in veterinary school. The high school student interested in becoming a veterinarian should follow a college preparatory program. The subjects should include English, math and sciences in preparation for applying to college. However, academic accomplishments are not the only skills needed to be a successful veterinarian.
Passion for Animals
The most important skill is a passion for animals and a commitment to the health and well-being of animals. The future veterinarian cannot just own a dog or cat; he must have desire to care for the pet and keep it healthy and happy. Veterinarians must also have a natural curiosity about other species, such as domestic farm animals or exotic species that live in the wild.
Academic Competencies
All veterinarians need outstanding competency in math, science, language and research and a commitment to lifelong learning. They need to keep informed of new scientific developments, quickly understand new information on procedures and drugs, and how to use them appropriately when treating their patients. They must be willing to take continuing education classes and attend conferences in their areas of specialization. As with physicians for the human population, they need to read articles in veterinary journals, understand the benefits of new drugs and meet with representatives who provide new types of medical equipment and supplies for the clinic.
Business Skills
A veterinary practice is primarily a service business that provides health care for animals. In a small animal practice for dogs and cats, the owners usually bring the animal into the office. If the veterinarian specializes in farm animals or species that reside in zoos, on-site visits are the normal place to examine the animals and provide treatment. The exceptions include animals that require surgery or lengthy observation to determine the proper course of treatment. Then it might be housed in a clinic for a short period unless the vet can rely on the owner or caregiver to provide useful observations. Like any other business, a clinic needs to have office space and staff to schedule appointments. It needs a waiting room, examination rooms, equipment, medical supplies and an inventory of medications needed to treat the patients. The services require a fee schedule, invoicing for services rendered and an accounting system to record payments to client accounts. All these things are part of running a successful business, and the veterinarian in a small practice must have an understanding of how to do them.
Interpersonal Skills
Almost every animal treated by a veterinarian has an owner. Whether it is a cat, dog, ferret, bird or any other type of pet, the owners of these animals are the clients who pay the bills. Good interpersonal skills with clients are essential when treating their pets. Clients must understand the instructions regarding vaccination schedules, feeding instructions, and proper administration of medications. Sadly, when an animal is too old or too sick to live a quality life and there are no more treatment options, the veterinarian must advise the client that the pet's life needs to end. Euthanasia is a difficult decision for pet owners, and the veterinarian and other staff members need to show empathy for clients who lose their pets.

La preparación empieza en el bachillerato y continúa hasta la universidad en los estudios de titulación en la Facultad de Veterinaria. El estudiante de bachillerato que le interesa ser Médico Veterinario debe seguir un programa universitario de preparación. Las materias deben incluir Inglés, matemáticas y ciencias como preparación antes de solicitar su ingreso a la universidad. No obstante, los logros académicos no son las únicas habilidades requeridas para ser un veterinario exitoso.
Pasión por los animales.
El talento más importante es tener una pasión por los animales y un compromiso por la salud y el bienestar de los mismos. El futuro veterinario no puede tener simplemente un perro o un gato; debe tener deseos por el cuidado de las mascotas y mantenerlas felices y saludables. Los veterinarios deben también tener una curiosidad natural sobre otras especies tales como los animales de granja o especies salvajes que viven en la naturaleza.
Competencias académicas
Todos los veterinarios deben ser competentemente sobresalientes en matemáticas, ciencias, lenguaje e investigación y una total dedicación al aprendizaje durante toda la vida. Deben mantenerse informados sobre los avances científicos; comprender rápidamente la nueva información sobre técnicas y fármacos, y cómo usarlos adecuadamente al momento de tratar a sus pacientes. Deben estar dispuestos a tomar cursos de educación continua y asistir a conferencias en sus áreas de especialización. Así como los médicos para la población humana, necesitan leer artículos de revistas veterinarias especializadas, entender los beneficios de los nuevos medicamentos y verse con representantes distribuidores de nuevos equipos para el médico veterinario y suministros para la clínica.
Habilidad para los negocios
La práctica veterinaria es, fundamentalmente un negocio de servicios que ofrece salud y cuidados para los animales. En la práctica de pequeñas especies, perros y gatos, los propietarios generalmente traen al animal al consultorio. Si el veterinario se especializa en animales de granja o especies propias de zoológicos, éste visita el lugar donde viven para examinarlos y darles tratamiento. Se exceptúan los animales que requieren cirugía o mantenerse en observación prolongada para determinar el curso adecuado del tratamiento. Sólo entonces pudiera ser internado en una clínica por un cierto período, a menos que el veterinario confíe en que el dueño o el encargado le proveerá de observaciones oportunas. Como cualquier otro negocio, una clínica necesita tener espacio para consultorio y personal para programar citas. Necesita de una sala de espera, Salas de exploración, equipo, suministros médicos y un inventario de medicamentos necesarios para el tratamiento de los pacientes. Los servicios requieren de un plan de tarifas, facturación por los servicios prestados y un sistema de contabilidad para registrar los pagos en las cuentas de los clientes. Todas estas cosas son parte del funcionamiento de un negocio exitoso y el veterinario en ejercicio debe tener una comprensión sobre cómo realizarla.
Destrezas interpersonales
Casi todos los animales tratados por un veterinario tienen un propietario. Ya sea un gato, un perro, un hurón, un ave o cualquier otro tipo de mascota, los dueños de estos animales son quienes ponen el dinero. Las buenas relaciones interpersonales con los clientes son esenciales al tratar a los animales. Los clientes deben comprender las instrucciones relativas a los calendarios de vacunación, instrucciones de alimentación, administración adecuada de medicamentos. Tristemente, cuando un animal es demasiado viejo o demasiado enfermo para vivir una vida con calidad y no hay más opciones de tratamiento, el veterinario debe recomendar al cliente que la vida de la mascota debe terminar. La eutanasia es una decisión difícil para los dueños de mascotas y el veterinario y otros miembros del personal deben mostrar empatía con los clientes que pierden a sus mascotas.
