Discussion

Charles Davis Feb 29, 2012:
aguas is moiré all right ...or "watered" referring to silk. We had a question on this a while back; I remember it because I posted an answer:
http://www.proz.com/kudoz/spanish_to_english/textiles_clothi...

But it's the "de colores" that puzzles me. How does that fit in? "Aguas" is that shimmering, ripply effect you get because of the surface of the cloth. Can you have coloured moiré? Not sure.

Lisa McCarthy (asker) Feb 29, 2012:
Hi Linda Thanks, Linda. Yes, I think that's it. See my comment to Wendy below.
Linda Robins da Silva Feb 29, 2012:
The definition in French seems to back this up
moiré, ~e /mwaʀe/
adjective
[tissu] moiré;
[soie, papier] watered.

Really a discussion entry, as not completely sure. Went via German.
Note from asker:
Thanks,Wendy, this looks like it might bit it. Checked 'moiré' in 2 Eng-Sp dictionaries and one gave 'muaré' and the other 'con aguas'.

Moire is only silk, but 'aguas' can be a 'watery' pattern where one colour is shot through with another and can apply to any material. The Spanish dictionary gives this as one definition (see below)
Example sentence:

Dark blue velvet shawl shot through with strands of silver and platinum

9. f. pl. Visos u ondulaciones que tienen algunas telas, plumas, piedras, maderas, etc.'
