Inland I spent many years in California living in the so-called "Inland Empire".
Strange name for a constitutional democratic state, but inland was used by the Californians...

I agree - it does go against the grain to treat the Norwegian vowels differently. On the same point - I recently had a similar dilemma with "Innlandet".
jeffrey engberg (asker) Mar 13, 2008:
hipp som hopp... I think they all work. I would prefer not using ø, as we do not use Å, Æ, or accent grave from french etc.
I also see that Mid-Norway is an acceptable replacement.
Strangely, Vestland, Sørland, Østland, and Nord-Norge all have translations!
brigidm Mar 13, 2008:
Also, if you google with "north trøndelag", you get a lot of authoritative sources - in fact more than you do with "north trondelag". Strictly speaking you're probably right about anglofying the spelling, but in practice it seems not to be the case....
brigidm Mar 13, 2008:
Hi Jeffrey. I'm working on a tourist brochure for Trøndelag so your question was particularly interesting for me. I've used the Norw spelling, because that's what their tourist board does, for one thing http://www.trondelag.com/ .
jeffrey engberg (asker) Mar 13, 2008:
Tronderlag = Midt-Norge Nord-Norge, Vestlandet, Sørlandet, and Østlandet all have translations.
Why not Trønderlaget?
I also see that Midt-Norge is used as a synonym...
jeffrey engberg (asker) Mar 13, 2008:
Tronderlag then I suppose it is best to change the Ø to O for English.
