Dollar for dollar a margin is the same as gross profit. Margin calculation uses cost as the base while gross profit calculation uses the sale price as the base. Eg., if you pay $100 for a hand gun and sell it for $120 your margin is $20, or 20/100 or 20% while your gross profit is also $20, but only 16.7%, or 20/120. That's because you are using a different base. This is before taking fixed expenses into consideration. After expenses, your margin will be reduced to net profit or 净利。
