French term

un visqueux

French to English Science Chemistry; Chem Sci/Eng
Hi all -

I am translating a scientific document where lab tests are being performed on a cosmetic product.

I am never seen visqueux used as a noun before, only as an adjective.

What might be the best way to translate it?
a viscous substance?

Thanks for any help!

Discussion

Johannes Gleim Jan 6, 2023:
Strange comment If you can read correctly, please cite correctly. Please do not mismatch 'scientists' (noun) with 'scientific' (adjective)

Johannes Gleim Jan 6, 2023:
@ Andrew Please do not disqualify scientists as non-native speakers when they use scientifically recognised terms of their specialist terminology just because you do not know them. Only in the case of major errors in orthography or grammar would doubts be appropriate. Otherwise, you get the impression not helping the asker, but to give your answer a head start.

viscosifier

An additive that increases viscosity, for whatever purpose.

Abstract
The cellulose obtained from Oil Palm Trunk (OPT) is used to determine its potential as a viscosifier agent for the Water-Based Mud (WBM)

Citric acid is used as an acidulant in creams, gels, and liquids. Used in foods and dietary supplements, it may be classified as a processing aid if it was added for a technical or functional effect (e.g. acidulent, chelator, viscosifier, etc.).

It is written by scientific knowing the special terminology, hence reliable.

An unguent

Peer comment(s):

neutral abe(L)solano : No, in Chemistry this has a proper name. An unguent is a pharmaceutical form/Yes I did, this is an injection, not an unguent/ointment

Er, did you read the context? // it's about a cosmetic product?? and it doesn't mention injections anywhere, that's your unfounded invention;
neutral Bourth : Just to point out that the text mentions seringue, aiguille, and injectabilité, so injections looks highly plausible to me.

viscosity enhancer

It's a term that crops up a lot when you look at crosslinked gel, hyaluronic acid, intrinsic viscosity (ɳint), and fibres (or filaments), etc.

"The ability of these polymers to act as viscosity enhancers were therefore not tied to their viscosity relative to that of HA [Hyaluronic Acid]"
https://thesis.library.caltech.edu/1880/7/06_Chapter_6.pdf
" In these dosage
forms, polymeric materials play different roles such as binders, matrix
formers or drug release modifiers, film coating formers, thickeners or
viscosity enhancers, stabilizers, disintegrants, solubilisers, emulsifiers,
suspending agents, gelling agents and bioadhesives"

viscosifying/thickening agent or thickener

Having studied Chemistry I know some formulations need more viscosity; here they are after a component of the final formulation that will also serve as lubrifiant for the gel used for injection.
They came up with 4 different ones (A-D).

Viscosifying agent

Gelled emulsions and methods of using the same
Abstract
Gelled emulsions contain (i.) an external phase of an aqueous water-soluble solvent solution, polymeric viscosifying agent and, optionally, an oxidative and/or acidic breaker...

You can also call it a "thickening agent":
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thickening_agent
A thickening agent or thickener is a substance which can increase the viscosity of a liquid without substantially changing its other properties.

(I don't like to cite Wikipedia, but this information is quite straight).

I guess the formulation is for a product like hyaluronic acid or something similar used in cosmetics.

@Michael: UNFORTUNATELY I see you promote the "copycat" behaviour in Kudoz. People don't have any clue, just wait and see what others "propose" and then profit to "ameliorate" their "versions".
