Hi all -

I am translating an article from a sports newspaper (SportLunedi).
The article concerns a series of tennis matches.

I am not sure how to best translate the phrase "si gioca la permanenza diretta" and am wondering if anyone can tell me what it means.

Attached is a screen cap, the phrase is at the very end of the third column .

Thanks everyone!
Michael

Relegation zone "ci si gioca la permanenza diretta" means that the winning team/athlete/club will remain in their current A1 league, but a loss would put them in the relegation zone. HTH

Serie A1 is the name of the league. I'm guessing permanenza means "stay in", but diretta?

rule out the risk of relegation

Si intende la possibilità di rimanere nella categoria, e quindi di non retrocedere, senza dover disputare altre gare. Nel calcio si parlerebbe di salvezza diretta (quando cioè la squadra ha punti sufficienti per restare nella categoria senza dover disputare i playout).
Si può naturalmente scegliere una formulazione diversa da quella che ho proposto io, ma il senso è quello.

the playing is/the A1 matches go on, non-stop

If, in this case, "diretta" means "non-stop", which is one translation that is given for it in the Cambridge online IT>EN glossary. This would cover the term "permanenza", which can refer to a period of time.

"The A1 tournament goes on, non-stop".

One of the translations for "diretto", in the first line, is "non-stop", right here: https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/dictionary/italian-engli...
Note from asker:
Thanks for this. I did check that reference (the Cambridge online dictionary) but checking "diretta" I only found listed "in diretta" which is of "live broadcast." Of course all the other online sources give the predictable "direct." So, in re the Cambridge site, would you have a link? I am probably not looking on the right page of that site. Thanks! Perhaps
Eeek; I typed "diretta" in the dictionary instead of generalizing it to "diretto." Obviously, I haven't taken my Gingko Biloba today... Thanks!
